Year-Round Lakefront Home on Estes Lake, Alfred, Maine: Welcome to Heaven

Deck View of Estes Lake in Alfred, Maine

This four-season lakefront home on tranquil Estes Lake in Alfred SOLD for $355,000 in November 2012 after 196 days on the market. Located at 75 Nutter Camp Road, the 2,204 square foot ranch is set on 8.3 acres.

The house was built in 1960 and the current owners purchased it in 2007. Positioned on a peninsula, it offers direct water views from most rooms. There are eight rooms, including three bedrooms and several bathrooms. The open concept and vaulted ceilings provide plenty of space for family and friends to gather. And the huge deck that sits almost directly over the water allows for great parties. There is also a garage, where you can store your boat in the winter.
This is the perfect location to make plenty of memories–the current owners certainly have, from “sitting on the deck enjoying a drink and waving to the neighbors going by on canoes, kayaks, fishing boats and power boats” to “learning how to wakeboard and waterski and going tubing, floating on rafts in the lake, sitting around the campfire, telling stories and making s’mores, watching movies in the basement theater on the projector that turns the entire wall into a movie screen, having morning coffee on the porch and going ice skating on the lake and at the nearby rink.” They love spending July 4th at the lake, where there are always plenty of fireworks and neighborhood BBQs.
The neighbors are an essential part of the fun at this waterfront real estate–there’s a big sense of community among them. “Whenever I need an extra set of hands, my neighbors or their children help with even the smallest of things,” says the current owner.
If he were to make any changes, it would be to partition off part of the giant living room to add a fourth bedroom and potentially an additional bathroom, making an official guest suite. But fourth bedroom or not, this house can easily accommodate large groups. “We’ve had great BBQs with family and friends, accommodating 20-40 people easily and slept 15+ at the house. The yard is large and flat, making it great for any activity. Plenty of parking! And the dishwasher makes cleanup a snap!”
Encompassing 387 acres, Estes Lake has a maximum depth of 30 feet and a mean depth of 10 feet. The lake is actually an impoundment of the Mousam River, formed when a dam was built in 1906.
Access to the lake is limited. The low boat traffic adds to the tranquility found on this beautiful lake. “It is much quieter than other lakes and is never too busy to go out on the boat or swim. The neighbors are all very courteous and kayaks/canoes and powerboats peacefully coexist,” says the owner. This is the place to get away from the hustle and bustle of your every day life.
Yes, it’s quiet on the lake, but less than five minutes away, you’ll find all the amenities you’ll need. The owner’s favorite local spots include The Maine Diner, The Steakhouse in nearby Wells, and other options in Alfred and Biddeford. “It’s amazing to be secluded on the lake, but then be able to drive fifteen minutes to grocery stores, movie theaters and restaurants.”
The current owners have used the house as a summer home. But they’ve also come up from the Boston area almost every other weekend throughout the entire year, including Christmas. “As it’s a real house and not a cottage, this place makes it a retreat all year round. If it’s to be a primary residence, all I can say is ‘Welcome to Heaven.’
