Time spent at your lakefront real estate on Estes Lake in the York County towns of Alfred and Sanford, Maine will surely renew your body and spirit. Yes, it’s quiet on the lake, but less than five minutes away, you’ll find all the amenities you’ll need. Many buildings in Alfred’s classic New England village are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Goodall Mansion, built in 1871, is situated in the center of Sanford. Estes Lake is only minutes from Wells, Ogunquit and Kennebunkport, 15 minutes from ocean beaches and an hour and a half from Boston.

Encompassing 387 acres, Estes Lake has a maximum depth of 30 feet and a mean depth of 10 feet. The lake is actually an impoundment of the Mousam River, formed when a dam was built in 1906. The New Falls Dam is currently owned by Kruger of Canada. In previous years there have been algae blooms on the lake.
An abundance of small minnows and perch provide a good forage base in Estes Lake. The principal fisheries are largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, chain pickerel and black crappie.


Access to the lake, however, is limited. The low boat traffic adds to the tranquility found on this beautiful lake. Get away from the hustle and bustle of your every day life by drifting in your kayak or canoe. Explore the secluded coves. Watch the great blue herons patrol the shoreline while searching for prey. Read a book on your dock. Sway on a hammock under the whispering pines beside your cottage, camp or cabin.
Hiking, hunting, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing are allowed at the Massabesic Experimental Forest in Alfred. Shaker Woods Reserve on Stone Road in Alfred is bounded by Hay Brook and the Middle Branch of the Mousam River, both of which flow into Estes Lake. Public canoe and kayak access plus some walking trails are available. Other walking trials are found throughout Sanford.
