Covering 4,680 acres, Pushaw Lake has a maximum depth of 28 feet, with a minimum depth of 11 feet. The lake is long and narrow, and despite it’s close proximity to Bangor, you can find solitude, if that’s what you seek. Six large islands, such as Dollar Island and Harwood Island, and several smaller ones dot the water body. Water quality tests indicate an average rank.
Where is the public boat launch? Actually, there are several–Lakeside Landing in Glenburn; Old Town Boat Landing on Beechwood Avenue; and Gould Landing off Essex Street in Orono.
What kind of fish can I catch in this lake, you may wonder. The principal fisheries are smallmouth bass, white perch and chain pickerel.
Be on the lookout for other forms of wildlife as well. Beavers, muskrats, eagles, osprey, loons and occasionally moose also call Pushaw Lake home.
The Greater Pushaw Lake Association works at “preserving and improving the quality of Pushaw Lake and Little Pushaw Pond.” Pushaw Stream connects the lake to the 44 acre pond in Hudson. The GPLA invites citizen scientists to join them as water quality monitors, invasive plant patrols and the annual loon count.
The town-owned Lakeside Landing in Glenburn is for residents and visitors alike. It’s a beautiful spot to swim, picnic and boat.
In Orono, the Nadeau-Savoy Memorial Park at Gould’s Landing offers a space for picnics, BBQ pits and swimming. A VietNam War Memorial is also located in the park.
History surrounds Pushaw Lake and many sites are recognized by the National Register of Historic Places. From Old Town Canoe to the Penobscot Nation Museum and the Maine Logging Museum, plus many other places of interest, there’s plenty to do and see just a short distance from the lake.
Pushaw Lake is located only minutes from the new Hollywood Slots. It’s 90 minutes to Baxter State Park and Mount Katahdin, Maine’s highest peak and the start or finish of the Appalachian Trail. Drive Downeast and in an hour you’ll be at Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park.
