Lake Megunticook is speckled with islands and stretches over 1,328 acres. It has a 30-mile perimeter, just waiting for you to explore. Approximately one third of the lake surface is in Camden, with a small wedge in Hope and the remaining 545 acres in Lincolnville. The maximum depth of the lake is 64 feet, with a mean depth of 23 feet. And this gem of a lake has above average water quality.
The Megunticook Watershed Association originally formed in 1969 as the Megunticook Lake Association. The name was changed when the focus became more inclusive of the entire region.
There are two improved boat launches on the lake–the first is at the south end on Route 52 and the other is on Route 105. Both offer 10-12 parking spaces and there is no fee.
On the lake, you’ll be treated to dramatic mountain views of the Camden Hills, and many islands, coves and nooks and crannies to explore. Poke about in your canoe or kayak. Land at Fernald’s Neck and enjoy the walking trails. Fish. Swim. Sail. Waterski. Wakeboard. Tube. I guarantee you’ll want to wake up early and spend all day on the water.
Or take a hike. Natural features in the area include Maiden Cliffs, Mount Megunticook and Mount Battie, which have connecting trails. The stone tower on Mount Battie offers a dramatic view of the ocean and islands near Camden Harbor.
Travel writer Eugene Fodor has described Camden as the “perfect picture postcard of a Maine Coastal village.”  This classic New England village has a historic district, which includes 58 buildings such as boathouses, woolen mills, ship captains’ homes and the former theater where “Peyton Place,” filmed here in 1956, held its world premiere. The pretty harbor is home to a mix of working and pleasure craft including a fleet of windjammer schooners.
As a premier year-round destination, the Mid Coast/Penobscot Bay Region is host to a variety of fantastic events. Summertime brings Windjammer Festival,  the North Atlantic Blues Festival, the Camden International Film Festival and the Annual Lobster Festival. When the snow flies be sure to check out Winterfest at the Camden Amphitheater, as well as the the US National Toboggan Championships at Camden Snow Bowl.
With some of Maine’s finest restaurants, art galleries, antique shops, boutiques, museums, historic homes and lighthouses just five minutes away, Lake Megunticook offers the perfect waterfront vacation destination. Unwind on the lake in absolute peace or head off on an adventure.
