Hikes in the Belgrade Lakes Region of Maine

Sunrise in the Belgrade Lakes Region of Maine

Mixed forests of hardwoods and conifers. Glacial boulders. Granite slabs. And best of all–views. Spectacular views of the Belgrade Lakes await those who climb to these summits. Along the way, take time to look for animal signs–moose or deer scrapes on maple and hemlock trees, bear claw marks on beech trees, coyote and fox scat left in a prominent place on the trail. Chances are the only wildlife you’ll see are chipmunks and red squirrels, but it’s fun to find clues left behind by other critters that share these woods.

The Mountain, Rome
While the 0.8-mile main trail follows an old logging road and is open to snowmobiles in the winter and hikers, horseback riders and mountain bikes all year, there are two loop trails that are for hikers only. The Great Pond Trail winds through a boulder field and leads to the highest point of The Mountain at 665 feet. The Long Pond Trail also has boulders and a steep drop off, at which point there is a stunning view of the pond below. Both trails join the main trail at the top.
Trailhead: Mountain Drive

Round Top Trail, Rome
This 3.3-mile loop trail passes by a granite quarry and winds through the mixed forest before it becomes a steep climb with several openings offering time to catch your breath and enjoy the views. From the summit, views include Long and Great Ponds, as well as Mount Phillip. A spur trail near the summit offers more lake and mountain views.
Trailhead: Corner of Watson Pond Road and Wildflower Estates
Degree of Difficulty: Moderate
Sanders Hill Trail, Rome
The 2.9-mile loop trail leads to a ridge line with extensive views of Watson Pond, Mount Phillip and French Mountain. After spending time at the 854-foot summit, descend via the southerly trail and walk beside Beaver Brook. Keep your eyes out for a large boulder known as Snapper Rock.
Trailhead: Watson Pond Road (1.3 miles south of Route 27 junction)
Degree of Difficulty: Moderate
