February 28, Friday, 1pm, “Midday Concert featuring guitarist Hugh Bowden,” Bowden said he got interested in guitar when he was about 11 years old and heard Chet Atkins on the radio. “I told my folks that I wanted to do that, and they bought me a Stella guitar with a blue and white body that arrived for Christmas that year,” Bowden recalled. “Over the following years, I taught myself the rudiments of playing because there were no people near our small town of Brooklin that gave guitar lessons. When he got out of the Army at age 21, Bowden formed a rock ‘n’ roll band, and it managed to get gigs around the eastern Maine area. “By my 30s, I had learned the Chet Atkins style of fingerpicking though never approaching the levels that he achieved,” said Bowden, who added that Chet Atkins was and remains the primary influence in his musical life. “But I began developing fingerstyle arrangements of songs that I liked and started to compose my own instrumental pieces.” Bowden also got involved in jazz guitar in his 40s and enjoyed a nearly 20-year membership in a jazz quintet called A-Train that performed all over the state and did several concerts on Maine Public Radio, free, Moore Center, 125 State Street, Ellsworth. February 28, Friday, 5pm, “Owl Prowl: Talk & Walk,” Learn how owls navigate the dark and sneak-up on their prey, and discover whooo is making that sound in the dark. While we learn we will be making s’mores by the fire. We will then take a look at what is an owl pellet and why owls make them. Then as the sun sets we will go out on the trail for a look at the night life and search for our feathered friends! Wear layers, bring a water bottle, and a headlamp or flashlight.*Be prepared to walk in limited lighting with proper footwear and a flashlight, though we will mainly try to use our night vision first so we do not scare off the wildlife. If you bring a flashlight please cover it in a thin layer of red fabric or plastic. The red light allows us humans to see, but most wildlife can’t see the red and it will not harm their vision as heavily, $8-$12, Hirundo Wildlife Refuge, 1107 W.
