“Winterfest 2025,” Downtown, Westbrook

February 26-March 2, Wednesday-Sunday, 10Am/Wed. and Fri, 7pm/Thurs, Fri. and Sat, 2pm/Sun, “The Birds,” Daphne du Maurier’s short story, also the basis for Alfred Hitchcock’s classic film, is boldly adapted by Conor McPherson—a gripping, unsettling, and moving look at human relationships in the face of societal collapse. In an isolated house, strangers Nat and Diane take shelter from relentless masses of attacking birds. They find relative sanctuary but not comfort or peace; there’s no electricity, little food, and a nearby neighbor may still be alive and watching them. Another refugee, the young and attractive Julia, arrives with some news of the outside world, but her presence also brings discord. Their survival becomes even more doubtful when paranoia takes hold of the makeshift fortress—an internal threat to match that of the birds outside, $8-$18, Russell Hall, 37 College Ave, Gorham.  FMI:  207-780-5151, usm.maine.edu.

February 28, Friday, 8pm, “Chris Trapper and Spencer Albee with Zack Bence,” The duo will play through songs from Spencer’s new retrospective release TIME MACHINE 2024-2000, as well as songs from his forthcoming full length record on Wurlitzer, baritone guitar, guitar, keyboards, ukulele and sampler. Spencer is an internationally acclaimed producer, songwriter, performer and creator, dinner available before the show by reservation at 6pm, credit cards not accepted for food $25pp +$5/handling fee, Stone Mountain Arts Center, 695 Dugway Road, Brownfield.  FMI:  207-935-7292, www.stonemountainartscenter.com.

March 1, Saturday, 8pm, “Kat Edmonson,” known most as a jazz singer, but she calls her music vintage pop. Whatever you call it, it is completely pure. She has shared stages with the likes of Lyle Lovett, Asleep at the Wheel, and Chris Isaac with appearances on Prairie Home Companion and E Town. When I heard her, there was something about her that reminded me of hearing Joni Mitchell when I was a kid.. She doesn’t sound like her, or the music isn’t the similar, but the command of her craft and her band reminds me of Joni. A terrific song writer with the sounds of a jazz singer, but the feel of a vintage folk singer. Oh, and she is an actress too, dinner available by reservation, seating begins at 6pm, credit cards not accepted on site for food, $40pp+$5/handling fee, Stone Mountain Arts Center, 695 Dugway Road, Brownfield.  FMI:  207-935-7292, www.stonemountainartscenter.com.

March 2, Sunday, 2-5PM, “Community Art Night (Afternoon),” This weekly time is open for everyone to convene, make new friends, and make art and crafts with other people. Supplies for a community drawing are available to use. We also welcome and encourage people to bring their own projects: painting, knitting, coloring books, journaling, collage, YOU NAME IT! This event is not about making good art. We do not care if you consider yourself an artist, or if you have ever made art before. We want this free space to be available for fun, discovery, exploring, and practice! Please carry out what you carry in and plan on limited sink usage for projects. You can find us through the open yellow door on the cement stairs. The community room in the space with the giant sliding doors, we like to keep them shut due to the heat, but we are there, free, Community Room at Lights Out Gallery, 10 Tannery Street, Norway.  FMI:  207-730-2973, www.lightsoutgallery.org.
