“Backyard Sugaring: Maple Syrup 101,” Paris Farmers Union, South Paris

Feb. 27, Thursday, 6:30pm, “Backyard Sugaring: Maple Syrup 101,” join the University of Maine Cooperative Extension for demonstrations and discussion on all aspects of making maple syrup-the sweetest gift of nature-in your own back yard. Feb. 28-Mar. 1 and Mar. 4, Friday-Sunday and Wednesday, 7pm/Fri. and Sat, 2pm/Sat. and Sun, 5pm/Wed, “Dear Edwina,” a collaboration between the Department of Theatre and the School of Music, by Zina Goldrich and Marcy Heisler, directed by Joyce A. Presutti and musical direction by Edward Reichert. Thirteen-year-old Edwina Spoonapple would do just about anything to be a part of the Kalamazoo Advice-a-Palooza Festival. When a talent scout from the festival visits her hometown, she trots out her musical advice, presenting shows live from the family garage in hopes of finding her place in the spotlight. Assisted by her older siblings, quirky friends and friendly neighbors, Edwina sets out to tackle the world’s problems in number after hysterical number. Feb. 28-29, Friday-Saturday, 7:30pm, “Hebron Academy Players presents ‘You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown’,” Happiness is… a great musical theatre! Based on the Charles Schulz comic strip and presented with charm, wit, and heart, “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown” explores life through the eyes of Charlie Brown and his friends in the Peanuts gang. This revue of songs and vignettes captures relatable life moments with humor, candor, and a great soundtrack. It’s a classic show that continues to entertain audiences of all ages. Hebron Academy’s show is free and open to the public, though donations will be accepted with 50% of proceeds going to support the Androscoggin Humane Society. Students in the ceramic studio will also be selling pottery bowls and ice cream at Intermission to support this cause inspired by the universal love of Snoopy. Feb. 29, Saturday, 9:30am-12:30pm, “Snowshoe-Crooked River Forest,” level of difficulty: Moderate/Strenuous; Join Loon Echo, Portland Water District (PWD) and Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW) staff members for a “partnerships” snowshoe hike. Guests will have an opportunity to learn from the experts that work to protect land, water, and wild communities in the northern Sebago Lake region. Feb. 29, Saturday, 1pm, “Met Opera Live in HD: Agrippina,” Handel’s tale of intrigue and impropriety in ancient Rome arrives in cinemas on February 29, with star mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato as the controlling, power-hungry Agrippina and Harry Bicket conducting. Sir David McVicar’s production ingeniously reframes the action of this black comedy about the abuse of power to “the present,” where it should loudly resonate. The all-star cast features mezzo-soprano Kate Lindsey as Agrippina’s son and future emperor Nerone, soprano Brenda Rae as the seductive Poppea, countertenor Iestyn Davies as the ambitious officer Ottone, and bass Matthew Rose as the weary emperor Claudius. Feb. 29, Saturday, 8pm, “Alana MacDonald,” singer, songwriter and violinist of the super folk trio Devonsquare will be here at SMAC for a exciting night showcasing Alana’s talents and charm. Alana is celebrating her 50th year with Devonsquare by performing new songs and old favorites with her bandmates Robbie Coffin, Teg Glendon, and pianist Mike McGinnis. The band released five records between 1983 and 1996, two on Atlantic Records. They toured with Peter Frampton and Melanie, opening for many artists such as Bonnie Raiit, Kris Kristofferson and Roy Orbison. After the death of band member, Herb Ludwig ,in 2005 ,Tom and Alana joined Rex Fowler from Aztec Two Step in “The John Lennon Project: from 2010 to 2014. Tom Dean retired in 2018 and after saying goodbye to Devonsquare, Alana, after much soul searching, decided to move forward solo.
