“Indoor Tour: Love in the Kennebunks,” Kennebunk

Feb. 20, Thursday, 10:30am, “York History with James Kences,” Thomas Gorges, a kinsmen of Sir Ferdinando Gorges, and a Puritan, arrived in this region early in the summer of 1640, to assume the responsibilities of deputy governor. For three years, until the summer of 1643, he remained here, and throughout that entire period, he wrote letters back to England, full of unique glimpses into local society, politics, and even the surrounding environment. These letters which have survived, will be the basis of the session, in combination with the deeds, the court records that enable us to understand what life must have been like in the place known as Gorgeana. Feb. 20, Thursday, 6pm, “Movie Night-The Biggest Little Farm,” this excellent film chronicles the eight-year quest of John and Molly Chester as they trade city living for 200 acres of barren farmland and a dream to harvest in harmony with nature. This film will kick-off the seasons gardening series in conjunction with the Biddeford Community Gardens, light refreshments will be served, free, McArthur Library, 270 Main Street, Biddeford. Feb. 22, Saturday, 11am-12pm, “Indoor Tour: Love in the Kennebunks,” it’s cold outside – so come in for a tour! Learn about the lives of the Kennebunkers of history on a behind-the-scenes tour through the Museum’s collections storage spaces, with a Valentine’s-themed twist: love stories! Feb. 22, Saturday, 8am-12pm, “Winter Wildlife Tracking,” the winter landscape is a wonderful time to connect with the lives of our local wildlife. Mammals, birds, and even insects leave behind tracks, trails and signs of their presence. Spend the morning with certified wildlife tracker Dan Gardoqui, learning to interpret the abundant clues of our wild neighbors. Participants should be dressed to be outdoors for the entire 3 hours – regardless of temperature. Dress in layers. Bring snacks and a drink. Program runs regardless of snow cover. Feb. 23, Sunday, 5:30-7:30pm, “Scottish Country Dancing,” we dance jigs, reels, and strathspeys mostly in longwise sets of 3, 4, or 5 couples. No partner is needed. Dances are taught. Thin soled, flexible shoes are recommended. Most weeks there is a beginner session 5:00-5:30, $4, Community House, Temple Street, Kennebunkport. Feb. 24, Monday, 6pm, “Beginner Swing Dancing Class,” Lindy Maine, a local organization offering jazz-age dance instruction, is offering a new session of beginner swing dancing classes in Biddeford starting on Feb. 24. The class will focus on 6-count swing, a form of Lindy Hop that makes for an easy entry point to learning the dance. It is danced to the traditional swing jazz of the era. Open to everyone, the six-week progressive class will run on Monday nights at 6 p.m. on the second level of Pepperell Center, 40 Main St. in Biddeford. Students do not need to bring a partner and require no previous dance experience. Class fees are $12 to try the first class or $60 for all six weeks.
