Nov. 14, Thursday, 7pm, “Kyle Carey Concert,” Kyle Carey’s unique trans-Atlantic fusion includes influences of the American Folk Anthology, the traditional music of Cape Breton, Ireland and Scotland, and the Appalachian poetry of Louise McNeill. As a young woman, Kyle traveled to Cape Breton on a Fulbright Fellowship to learn Scottish Gaelic. Afterwards, she spent a year on the Isle of Skye in Scotland—honing her skills in the Gaelic language and studying traditional singing techniques. To date she has released three albums—Monongah, North Star. and The Art of Forgetting. Footloose is the story of Ren McCormack, a teenage boy from Chicago. He and his mother move to the small town of Bomont after his father abandons them. Upon arriving, Ren finds himself at odds with most of the town, including the Reverend Bomont. The Reverend has convinced the town to outlaw dancing, which Ren finds unbelievable. With the help of the Ariel (the Reverend’s daughter) and Willard (a country hick who becomes his best friend), Ren convinces the Reverend to let the teenagers dance, and in the process helps the town to heal from a tragedy that affected them all, $5-$10, Lewiston-Auburn Community Little Theatre, 30 Academy Street, Auburn. Nov. 15, Friday, 7:30pm, “Palaver Strings presents Welcome Home,” celebrates the vitality of Maine’s immigrant communities through music and storytelling. Palaver Strings will collaborate with guest artists of Franco-American, Burundian, and Iraqi heritage, sharing traditional music and personal stories of their families’ journeys to Maine. As we tour with this program around Maine, we will celebrate Maine’s cultural diversity, reflect on our own histories, and create space for dialogue between performers and listeners from different backgrounds. Nov. 17, Sunday, 3pm, “Bates College Choir: ‘Northern Star’,” giving voice to our longing to grasp the expansiveness of nature and the celestial realm, the choir sings music by Norwegian and Finnish composers Ola Gjeilo, Kim André Arnesen and Jussi Chydenius, as well as by Brahms, Mendelssohn and Schubert. Also: “Stars” by Latvian composer Ēriks Ešenvalds, which uses evocative harmonies and the otherworldly sound of ringing crystal glasses in a setting for Sara Teasdale’s poem about the awe of watching the stars.
