Oct. 3-6, Thursday-Sunday, all day events, “Maine’s Blue-Ribbon Classic: The Fryeburg Fair,” Fryeburg Fair sits on 185 acres and has over 100 buildings. The eight-day fair hosts over 3,000 animals including prize-winning draft horses, ponies, racing horses, oxen, dairy & beef cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, poultry, rabbits and much more, midway, history barns, working sugar house, horse racing, exhibits, and much more, $12, free/12 and under, Fairgrounds, 1154 Main Street, Fryeburg. Oct. 4-6 and 9, Friday-Sunday and Wednesday, 7:30pm/Fri. and Sat, 5pm/Sun. and Wed, “The Women Who Mapped the Stars,” it’s the end of the19th century. Employed for half a man’s salary to analyze astronomical data at the Harvard College Observatory, four courageous women of science pave the way for the next generation of astronomers and astrophysicists, including Cambridge University trained scholar, Cecilia Payne. In this inspiring and time-bending story taken from true events, we experience the struggles and achievements of these remarkable women who imagined the impossible and changed the way we see the universe and ourselves. Oct. 4, Friday, 7:30pm, “Cohen Concert,” featuring world-renowned musicians Jan Müller-Szeraws on cello and Sonya Ovrutsky Fensome on piano. Müller-Szeraws is member of the contemporary music ensemble Boston Musica Viva and performs with the Boston/ Andover based group Mistral. He is artist-in-residence, director of the music performance program at the College of the Holy Cross and founder and director of the Chamber Music Institute at Holy Cross, an intensive chamber music summer immersion program for gifted high school and college students. Müller-Szeraws has taught master classes in the US and South America. He was a guest lecturer at the Universidad Católica de Chile and currently also teaches at the Phillips Academy Andover. Ms. Ovrutsky Fensome has performed in major venues in the United States, Europe, Russia, and South Africa – including Weill Carnegie Concert Hall and Lincoln Center in NY, Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, Aspen Music Festival, Palace de Beaux Arts in Brussels and Lucerne Music Festival. She performed as soloist with the Aspen Festival Orchestra, Reno Philharmonic, and Neuchatel Festival Orchestra in Switzerland. She concertizes, teaches, leads the M. Oct. 4-5, Friday-Saturday, 7:30pm, “Mike Miclon’s The Early Evening Show Halloween Special,” a spooktacular edition of The Early Evening Show, the late-night talk show spoof. The special Halloween show will tell the secret to trick-or-treating success and give costume inspiration. A sell-out phenomenon, the Early Evening Show is the longest-running live variety show in Maine state history. Oct. 5-6, Saturday-Sunday, 10am-4pm, “Art at Marrett-A Celebration of Art, History and Foliage,” come celebrate Maine arts and crafts at the 11th annual Art at Marrett, showcasing the work of the Saco River Art League and other Maine artists, all of whom will be on hand displaying and selling their work.. Free tours of the 1789 Marrett House will be offered on the hour. Tours tell the stories of three generations of the colorful Marrett family and the prominent role they played in rural Standish society in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Oct. 5, Saturday, 7pm, “Music with a Mission: Bruce Marshall Group,” the very talented Bruce Marshall Group will perform in concert at the North Windham Union Church. Bruce Marshall’s music career spans five decades and the singer, songwriter, guitarist has been a full-time musician his entire adult life. With an affinity early on for blues, rock and 60’s pop, he honed his chops in the gin mills of New England and put out his first record in ‘87. He went National with guitarist Toy Caldwell in ‘89, touring the US with Charlie Daniels and Lynyrd Skynyrd. He has fronted the Bruce Marshall Group since 1991. Their sound defies categorization, slipping seamlessly around touches of Blues, R&B, Rock and Southern Boogie. They have shared the stage with Bo Diddley, Blood Sweat and Tears, Joe Cocker, John Hiatt, Bryan Adams, Boz Scaggs, Doobie Brothers, The Band and a host of others. Bruce Marshall recently put out his 7th record “Borrowed Time” in 2018. He has performed in over 9,000 shows as a pro and still plays over 200 shows a year. “We are very proud to welcome Bruce Marshall as our season headliner to close out our seventh season for Music with a Mission,” said Dr. Richard Nickerson, Minister of Music for NWUC. “Bruce is a local treasure living in Denmark, Maine. Oct. 5, Saturday, 7:30pm, “The Early Risers,” folk duo made up of Ashley Storrow and Putnam Smith. Both rootsy and lyrical, their original songs feature close vocal harmonies and arrangements on a wide array of instruments: banjo, guitar, mandolin, piano, and shruti box.
