“Presentation on Invasive Forest Pests and Outdoor Tree ID Walk,” Round Top Farm, Damariscotta

Sept. 12-15, Thursday-Sunday, 7:30pm, “Camelot,” adapted from T.H. White’s novel Once and Future King, this iconic Lerner and Loewe masterpiece brings to life the love story between King Arthur, Guinevere, and the King’s favorite among his Knights of the Round Table, Lancelot. Sept. 13, Friday, 10am-12pm, “Presentation on Invasive Forest Pests and Outdoor Tree ID Walk,” invasive forest pests like emerald ash borer and hemlock woolly adelgid are having devastating impacts on Maine’s forests; browntail moth is affecting human health as well as tree health; Asian longhorned beetle, with a large host range could be the next invader on the horizon. Hildy Ellis of Knox-Lincoln Soil & Water Conservation District will present a program about these invaders. Using slides and an outdoor tree ID walk, this workshop will help landowners and users, as well as landscape and forestry professionals, learn to: identify current and potential invasive forest pests and their host species; understand the threats to our forests and woodlands posed by these pests; limit their spread; and how to report suspected pest sightings or damage to trees that may be a result of pest infestations. All participants will receive an information packet with fact sheets about the major pest species, how to make decisions about treatment, current quarantine information for emerald ash borer in Maine, and other relevant information, free, reservations required, Round Top Farm, 3 Round Top Lane, Damariscotta. Sept. 13, Friday, 8pm, “Tom Porter and Friends,” Tom Porter has more than 30-years experience performing jazz piano on both sides of the Atlantic. A native of Birmingham, England, he won the BBC’s best jazz soloist under 30 award many years ago. He wouldn’t qualify for it now. Tom played as a sideman accompanying most of the UK’s top jazz musicians in the 1980s and 90s. Some of you in Maine may know Tom in another role. For nearly eight years he was one of the featured voices on Maine public radio, where he worked as a radio news anchor and reporter. Saxophone player Frank Mauceri is a musical educator, improviser, composer and teacher. He is currently senior lecturer in music at Bowdoin College. His compositions include chamber music, electro-acoustic music, multi-media works, and jazz arrangements. He and bass player Sam Sherry compose many of the tunes performed by Tom Porter and Friends. Sam Sherry has been performing on bass since 1974! (But he did start when he was very young). A native of Connecticut, Sam has played concerts on both coasts and in eight countries. A graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, he has played with many jazz notables, including Jimmy Heath, Eric Marienthal, Jerry Bergonzi and Curtis Fuller. Michael Boucher has played drums in various jazz and R&B ensembles for many years. Most recently, in the Portland area with the Mainestream Jazzmasters, a large jazz combo, with The Sidemen, a classic piano trio, and also with various singers, Freeport Players and other groups. Sept. 14, Saturday, 3pm, “Ensemble Origo,” directed by Eric Rice ’91, will present “Le Nozze in Baviera,” Orlando di Lasso’s music for the 1568 Wedding of Wilhelm V of Bavaria and Renate of Lorraine. The music — performed by singers, recorders, sackbuts, and violas da gamba — invites us to consider race relations, commerce, and their effects on the culture of early modern Naples and Munich.
