“Arts on the Hill: Shakespeare,” Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport

July 25-28 and 30-31, Thursday-Sunday and Tuesday-Wednesday, 2pm/Thurs. and Tues, 7:30pm/Thurs.-Sun. and Tues.-Wed, “Hello Dolly,” the blockbuster Broadway hit, bursts with humor, romance, high-energy dancing, and some of the greatest songs in musical theater history. The musical follows the romantic and comic exploits of Dolly Gallagher Levi (a strong-willed matchmaker), as she travels to New York to find a match for the miserly “well-known unmarried half-a-millionaire” Horace Vandergelder. July 25, Thursday, 7:30pm, “La Belle Epoque,” the music of La Belle Époque, the early 20th-century era of optimism, peace and prosperity, inspires an evening that strips the veneer of Parisian sophistication to reveal the erotic longing and ecstasy that characterizes this program’s poetry and music. Tenor Nicholas Phan returns to Bay Chamber Concerts after his astonishing performances at our Screen Door Festival last year; he has been described by the Boston Globe as “one of the world’s most remarkable singers”. A Maine native and former Bay Chamber Young Stars of Maine prizewinner, Henry Kramer is “…a pianist of enormous talent… a big personality” (The Philadelphia Inquirer). July 26, Friday, 7:30pm, “Mozart, Mackey, Faure,” commissioned in 2013, guest artist Steven Mackey’s One Red Rose was composed to commemorate President John F. Kennedy on the fiftieth anniversary of his assassination. To find an artistic point of entry into the trauma of the assassination, Mackey empathized with Jackie Kennedy, describing her as a “vivid symbol of way the assassination traverses the public and the private”. On the second half, the second of Fauré’s magisterial piano quartets (hear the first on July 15 ). Praised for his keen intelligence, captivating stage presence and natural musicianship, Nicholas Phan performs regularly with the world’s leading orchestras and opera companies. What are some key considerations made in developing a true “forest” management plan? How do you strike a proper balance between what may be competing wildlife, recreational, aesthetic – and timber interests? What about invasive species? What’s most important in developing your short- and long-term management goals for your own patch of wooded heaven – be it 10 or 10,000 acres? Join the Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust for a walk with the purpose of seeing the forest for the trees. BTLT Board Member and forester Charlie Spies, along with Steve Pelletier, consulting forester and wildlife biologist, will spend a couple of hours walking the forest trails of Crystal Spring Farm to discuss all these topics and more.  Come dressed properly for a walk with your questions and concerns about forest and woodland management. July 28, Sunday 3pm, “Arts on the Hill: Shakespeare,” actors from the Camden Shakespeare Festival will present scenes from both Hamlet and The Taming of the Shrew.
