May 24, Friday, 6pm, “Ben Rosenblum Trio,” New York-based jazz pianist and accordionist, and recipient of awards from ASCAP, Downbeat and the American Jazz Piano Competition, Ben Rosenblum celebrated the release of his album Instead (4 stars, Downbeat) last year. He has toured nationally and internationally, performing with his trio throughout the United States as well as in Canada and Japan. May 25, Saturday, 8am-12pm, “Bird Walk and Bluebird Nest Box Workshop,” held by Maine Coast Heritage Trust, the bird walk will be held at 8 a.m. led by MCHT steward/naturalist, Kirk Gentalen. Kirk will guide participants around MCHT’s Teen Ag garden and through the woods in search of migratory songbirds – warblers, thrushes, vireos, sparrows – and discover what other feathered creatures inhabit the preserve. The bird walk will be followed by a bluebird nest box workshop at 10 a.m. in which John Twomey will provide materials and guidance for participants to build boxes to take home. Inspired by a true story, Radium Girls traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court, and for her life. Her chief adversary is her former employer, Arthur Roeder, an idealistic man who cannot bring himself to believe that the same element that shrinks tumors could have anything to do with the terrifying illnesses among his employees. As the case goes on, however, Grace finds herself battling not just with the U.S. Radium Corporation, but with her own family and friends, who fear that her campaign for justice will backfire.
