If is this event that historians recognize as a crucial landmark in the narrative of the origins of the Civil War. For the nation, and certainly for York, this period is dominated by Andrew Jackson and his unique political philosophy of territorial expansion, hostility to banks and to government spending. By the early 1830s the town has lost its status as county seat and withdraws into a time of relative quiet that only begins to change as the larger political controversies intrude into local life by the decade of the 1850’s, free, York Public Library, 15 Long Sands Road, York.
