“US Army Field Band: Jazz Amabassadors,” Freeport Performing Arts Center

Apr. 4, Thursday, 7pm, “US Army Field Band: ‘Jazz Ambassadors, The Greatest Generation’,” is a tribute to the men and women of World War II. This is a WW2 themed program of about 60 minutes of music from the era which is designed to honor our Veterans from that period. Audiences will enjoy many of the classic Big Band Era songs while the story of the war is told through pictures and videos. “The Greatest Generation” focuses on the American sentiment, American resolve and American unity that defined this generation with narration that features letters written to and from servicemen and women during the war, as well as famous quotes from the likes of Presidents Franklin D. Apr. 4, Thursday, 7pm, “Camden Library Coffeehouse Concert with Ale House String Band,” the Ale House String Band’s style is unique, melding the theory and techniques of classical music with traditional folk styles. Oren is a classically trained vocalist, Brian is a wandering soul who picked up music along the way, and April has a Masters degree in Music Performance. Apr. 5-6, Friday-Saturday, 7pm/Fri. and Sat, 2pm, “Singing in the Rain, Jr” the “Greatest Movie Musical of All Time” is faithfully and lovingly adapted by Broadway legends Betty Comden and Adolph Green, from their original award-winning screenplay in Singin’ in the Rain JR, with songs by Arthur Freed & Nacio Herb Brown. Apr. 5, Friday, 7:30pm, “Jack Burt in Concert,” Dr. Jack Burt, trumpet, Ryu Mitsuhashi, violin & Dr. Laura Artesani, piano. Apr. 6, Saturday, 11am, “The Magician’s Assistant,” Magician’s sick in bed?! Too bad, the show must go on! The Magician’s Assistant is a physical comedy about the transformative power of believing in yourself and asking for help. Everything seems under control until the magician’s assistant blunders onstage and has to entertain the crowd in the magician’s absence. Clown Mélissa Smith portrays the characters with expert comedic flare! Video projections and animation add an extra dose of unexpected folly. Apr. 7, Sunday, 2pm, “Bowdoin College Concert Band Friends III,” this performance will be highlighted by the guest appearance of trumpet soloist, Jack Burt, Professor of Music at the University of Maine. Dr. Burt will appear as soloist on classic works for trumpet including Kent Kennan’s Sonata for Trumpet; Philip Sparke’s Song and Dance; and a setting of Two Irish Folk Melodies by Donald Hunsberger. Also included on the program is a tribute to the 20th anniversary of the Columbine High School massacre. American Elegy by Frank Ticheli was commissioned and premiered by Columbine High School to honor all who lost their lives as well as those affected by the tragic event of April 20, 1999. Apr. 7, Sunday, 4pm, “Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas,” internationally acclaimed duo of Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser and cellist Natalie Haas, Fraser, acclaimed by the San Francisco Examiner as “the Michael Jordan of Scottish fiddling,” has a concert and recording career spanning 30 years. He has been featured on over 100 television and radio shows in the U.S. and the U.K. including CBS Sunday Morning, A Prairie Home Companion, and Mountain Stage. Fraser has made guest appearances with The Chieftains and as featured soloist along with Itzhak Perlman at New York’s Lincoln Center. His film credits include solo performances on the soundtracks of The Last of the Mohicans and Titanic.
