Mar. 28, Thursday, 2pm, “Winter Tree Presentation,” Curious about the secret life of twigs? Learning about our leaves, twigs, bark and branches of trees lets us see the forest for the trees, and come to recognize all the Maine species as dear friends. This indoor presentation will give you a solid background and vocabulary of twiggy terms, and challenge you to identify leaf buds from branch samples, all within the comfort of indoor heating and plumbing, registration required, $5, free/members, Maine Lake Science Center, 51 Willett Road, Bridgton. Mar. 28, Thursday, 7:30-9:30pm, “Southern Maine Symphony Orchestra,” under the direction of Robert Lehmann will present their spring concert at Westbrook Performing Arts Center. The concert will feature the head of voice studies at USM, Malinda Haslett, soprano, in the exquisite work of Hector Villa Lobos, Bachianas Brasileiras #5. Mar. 30, Saturday, 12pm, “Met Opera Live in HD: Die Walkure,” In what is expected to be a Wagnerian event for the ages, soprano Christine Goerke plays Brünnhilde, Wotan’s willful warrior daughter, who loses her immortality in opera’s most famous act of filial defiance. Tenor Stuart Skelton and soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek play the incestuous twins Siegmund and Sieglinde. Greer Grimsley sings Wotan. Philippe Jordan conducts. Yes you get it all with this Vermont band. Beautiful harmonies and incredible musicianship, they were dubbed Falcon Ridge Folks Festivale ‘#1 Most Wanted, Band!” Tim Obrien says, ….”Mile Twelve, a group of five accomplished bluegrass musicians who write, sing, and play like the wind. Mar. 31, Sunday, 2pm, “USM Concert Band: Applause for Paws,” Jackie Townsend will direct, join the USM Concert Band as they perform works inspired by our animal companions. From Gershwin’s classic Walking the Dog (featuring faculty soloist Tom Parchman on clarinet), to Julie Giroux’s newly released Our Castaways (dedicated to rescued pets), this performance will showcase how nature has inspired composers to create wonderful works of art.
