“Dreamers Circus,” Collins Center for the Arts, Orono

Mar. 28-30, Thursday-Saturday, 7pm, “The Elephant Man,” presented by Ten Bucks Theatre Company, based upon the life of Joseph Merrick, a man so physically deformed that he became known as the “Elephant Man.” With very few options open to him, is forced to display himself to the public in travelling sideshows. Eventually, however, he finds himself alone and destitute in London. Due to the kindness of one Dr. Frederick Treves, Merrick is soon admitted into the London Hospital for care and observation. Treves becomes determined to help Merrick lead a normal life, and Merrick soon becomes the toast of society. In the end however, John Merrick, The Elephant Man, finds that normality isn’t something he can achieve, or that he even necessarily wants, $10, Bangor Mall, Stillwater Avenue, Bangor. Mar. 29, Friday, 7pm, “West Side Story Viewing,” the Bangor Symphony Orchestra will hold a viewing of “West Side Story.” This free film screening is presented as part of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra’s season-long celebration of the Leonard Bernstein Centennial, culminating in a performance of selections from ‘Candide’ on April 7. Mar. 29, Friday, 7:30pm, “University of Maine Singers Spring Tour Concert,” recently home from their annual Spring Tour the University of Maine Singers, under the direction of Francis John Vogt, will share the program they performed in high schools and churches throughout Central Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. The concert pairs selections from Handel’s Messiah (they will perform the complete work on April 28) with modern and contemporary motets by Herbert Howells, John Tavener, and Z. Randall Stroope. The program also features settings of Walt Whitman by Norman Dello Joio and René Clausen in commemoration of the poet’s bicentennial. Mar. 30-31, Saturday-Sun, 7pm/Sat, 3pm/Sun, “Robinson Ballet presents Giselle,” Giselle, a full-length ballet in two acts, tells the heart-breaking story of an innocent young village girl who falls in love with Albrecht, the Duke of Silesia disguised as a peasant named Loys. Act I closes with Giselle discovering his real identity and that he is betrothed to the Prince’s daughter. Giselle, driven mad with grief, dies of a broken heart. Act II unfolds as Albrecht comes grieving to her grave and is surrounded by Wilis, the spirits of young girls who were jilted before their wedding day and now seek revenge upon men by forcing them to dance to their deaths. Giselle protects him from the avenging spirits, and through true love, saves his life. Mar. 30, Saturday, 7pm, “Husson University Dance Club’s Eighth Annual Showcase,” this year’s theme is “Classic to Cutting Edge.” This year’s showcase will feature original pieces performed and choreographed by Husson students in a variety of dance styles. Dance Club members have devoted over six months to preparing for this event. Husson’s Dance Club is open to anyone enrolled at the university. Everyone, regardless of their past dance training and experience, can participate in club activities. Mar. 31, Sunday, 3pm, “Music by ‘Dreamer Circus’,” a new driving force in Nordic world music is the young Danish trio, Dreamers’ Circus. Contemporary and endlessly innovative in their approach, they draw inspiration from the deep traditions of folk music in the region and reshape them into something bright, shiny and new. Dreamers’ Circus are: Nikolaj Busk (DK) on piano and accordion, Ale Carr (SWE) on Nordic cittern and Rune Tonsgaard Sørensen (DK), also of the Danish String Quartet, on violin. Dreamers’ Circus display inventiveness and talent in their approach to performances that include music from Denmark and Sweden as well as Iceland and the far reaches of the Faroe Islands and Greenland. The ensemble has won five prestigious Danish Music Awards and toured throughout Europe and beyond, with performances in Japan and the Sydney Opera House in Australia. An American tour is planned for 2019. The trio collaborates regularly with the Danish String Quartet and the Copenhagen Philharmonic and performs with the BBC Scottish Orchestra in 2018, $15-$30, Collins Center for the Arts, 2 Flagstaff Road, Orono.
