Brinegar was thrice named Maine’s Best Comedian by the Portland Phoenix. He’s worked with Last Comic Standing winner Iliza Shlesinger and was featured on the Comedy Time Network. Jan. 31-Feb. 3, Thursday-Sunday, 7:30pm/Thurs.-Sat, 3pm/Sat, 2pm/Sun, “Human Error,” a blundering fertility doctor mistakenly implants the embryo of a latte-sipping liberal couple into the womb of a NRA-cardholding conservative family in the East Coast. Imagine two families who, under normal circumstances, would never choose to be in the same room with each other, now having to spend nine months together attempting to become friends for the good of the child. This exciting new script threads a delicate needle between satire and think piece, social commentary and goofball comedy. “Comedy is a powerful tool for exploring difficult subject matter — it lowers your defenses and smuggles big ideas into surprising packages” says playwright Eric Pfeffinger. The message of the show isn’t what side is right and which side is wrong but about the places we might have common ground — such as the fear of being a new parent. Like flipping between NPR and Fox News, playwright Pfeffinger pits NRA-loving conservatives against liberal yogis and forces each to step outside their comfort zone and acknowledge that there are other people in the world who are not just like them. The play, says Director Christopher Schario, asks the politically timely question, “Will our similarities ever outweigh our differences?” $20/adults, $17/groups, $5/18 and under, Public Theatre, 31 Maple Street, Lewiston. Feb. 1-3, Friday-Sunday, 7:30pm/Fri. and Sat, 2pm/Sun, “A Fox on the Fairway,” A charmingly madcap adventure about love, life, and man’s eternal love affair with… golf. This hilarious romp, which pulls the rug out from underneath the stuffy denizens of a private country club, is filled with mistaken identities, slamming doors, and over the top romantic shenanigans. When Henry Bingham makes a hefty wager, which includes his wife’s beloved antique shop, against his longtime adversary, Dickie Bell, he believes that he can’t possibly lose. Unfortunately, an underhanded double-cross foils his plans, sending him and the other members of the club into a panicked frenzy. As tee time approaches, Henry must ensure his victory or losing everything. If only he had more than just half-wits and lushes at his disposal. This can’t-miss comedy is sure to entertain both lovers and haters of the ancient game of golf, $21-$24, Waterville Opera House, 1 Common Street, Waterville. FMI: 207-873-7000, www.operahouse.org.
