Nov. 4, Sunday, 2pm, “University Concert Band,” the University Concert Band’s fall concert will be conducted by our new director of bands, Jackie Townsend. Dr. Jackie Townsend joins the faculty at the University of Southern Maine as the director of bands, conducting the University Wind Ensemble and University Concert Band, as well as teaching courses in instrumental music education and instrumental conducting. She recently graduated from the University of North Texas (Denton, Texas), where she received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in wind conducting and studied with Eugene Migliaro Corporon, Dennis Fisher, and Nicholas Enrico Williams. As a conducting teaching fellow at UNT, Jackie was responsible for directing the UNT Concert and University Bands, as well as guest directing the UNT Brass Band, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and the North Texas Wind Symphony. She also taught undergraduate conducting courses and maintained the UNT Wind Studies music library. Nov. 7, Wednesday, 7pm, “Kim Nazarian 2018 Jazz Residency Concert,” the concert will feature Grammy Award-winning jazz vocalist Kim Nazarian with Fryeburg Academy’s Big Band, Chorus, and Vocal Jazz Ensemble. The concert will also include a professional set during which Ms. Nazarian will be joined on stage by regional professionals Les Harris Jr., John Hunter, and Mark Shilansky. Ms. Nazarian will be leading an artist-in-residency experience for the Fryeburg Academy student musicians for three days prior to the concert.
