Sept. 20, Thursday, 7pm, “The Life and Mysterious Death of Maine-born Millionaire, Sir Harry Oakes,” by David Leigh, presented by the Belgrade Historical Society. Sir Harry Oakes’ career, fortune and death garnered worldwide attention, but he never forgot his Maine roots. Sept. 20-22, Thursday-Saturday, 8pm, “The Sensuous Senator,” Senator Douglas is running for President on a “morality” platform, but when his wife Lois leaves to attend a conference in Chicago he does not hesitate to invite Veronica, his secretary and lover, over. Finding her unavailable, he has an escort agency send voluptuous Fiona. All seems well until his elderly Congressional colleague and neighbor locks himself out and asks to spend the night. Then freshman Congressman Jack Maguire drops in unexpectedly and Fiona, unsure who her client is, zeros in on him. Meanwhile, Veronica changes her plans and appears on the scene. Before Lois reaches the airport, her fashionable Washington townhouse is swarming with libidinous politicians, scantily dressed women, security police and a muckraking reporter from The National Intruder! Sept. 21-23, Friday-Sunday, 7:30pm/Fri. and Sat, 2pm/Sun, “Things My Mother Taught Me,” Olivia and Gabe are moving into their first apartment together. They’ve just packed up all of their belongings and driven halfway across the country, to start a new life together in Chicago. Their moving day doesn’t go exactly as planned, though, and things become slightly more complicated when all of their parents show up to help! Sept. 22, Saturday, 4pm, “Klezmer Music,” featuring Sruli Dresdner on accordion and clarinet and Lisa Mayer on violin and vocals. International Klezmer personalities Sruli and Lisa have performed on PBS-TV and National Public Radio as well as at festivals, concerts and synagogues all over the world. The multi-instrumentalists and vocalists play the clarinet, violin, accordion, base recorder, cello and drum. The Los Angeles Times called them “superb musicians.” They were featured at the Cracow Festival of Jewish Culture in Poland, the Jerusalem Cultures Center, and in Weimar, Germany. The two are scholars of Klezmer and Chassidic music and dance and teach workshops at synagogues, universities and schools around the country. Sept. 26, Wednesday, 6:30pm, “Industrial Augusta: The Story of the Paper Mill Workers,” Come learn about the rich local history of industrial Augusta in this second event in our Heritage Center at Mill Park series. Last time we learned about the cotton mill; for this event, Jan Michaud, founder of the Heritage Center, will present a brief overview of the Heritage Center at Mill Park, followed by a special screening of videos of interviews with former paper mill workers, concluding with a question and answer session, free, Lithgow Public Library, 45 Winthrop Street, Augusta.
