Sept. 15, Saturday, 10am, “History Walk & Talk: Cemetaries,” walking tour with historian and author Joe Hardy, participants will take a tour of the historic cemeteries of Wells. From there, participants will be guided to carpool to several locations. Hope M. Shelley, Wells Town Historian, writes, “Wells has many cemeteries containing headstones with distinctive decoration depicting the social periods of our 370 plus years of settlement. In the 1920s and 30s Judge Lester Bragdon researched and documented many of them by location, family and inscribed notations. By the 1980s the volunteer Cemetery Committee of the Historical Society began to search for those that Judge Bragdon had noted. In the process not only were more cemetery locations found but also more burials were noted. In 1994, through site visits, the measurements of the cemetery perimeters, conditions of the stones, family names and the GPS coordinates were noted for nearly 1/3 of the two hundred cemetery locations in Wells. In 2013-2014 the Town of Wells embarked on a Cemetery maintenance program in an effort to locate, clean-up, photograph and locate the cemeteries in Town.” Joe Hardy is the author of History of a Maine “Little River,” Settlement & Abandonment on Tatnic Hill: An Eclectic History of Wells, Maine, 1600-1900, and Four American Stories: Emigration and the Lure of the West. With his family, he has lived for many years on the Hill Road, the old “Way to Wells” from South Berwick. He also serves as a director on the Board of the Historical Society of Wells and Ogunquit. He says, ““Having utilized the Historical Society’s resources in my research and writing, I felt it was time to give something back, and contribute to the Society’s goal of helping townspeople appreciate and understand the rich history of the Town,” $5, free/members of The Historical Society of Wells and Ogunquit, Historical Society of Wells and Ogunquit, 983 Post Road (Route One), Wells.
