Sept. 13-16, Thursday-Sunday, 7-9:30pm, “Camden International Film Festival,” film industry, filmmakers, audiences and press convene on The Camden International Film Festival, a prestigious documentary film festival, Sept 13 – 16 at venues in Camden, Rockport, and Rockland. Over 70 films will screen, with filmmakers in attendance from around the globe. The festival also offers an opportunity to experience 20 new Virtual Reality installations. Sept. 14, Friday, 4:30-6pm, “Alexander Pushin and the Music of Russian Romanticism,” with Soprano Sarah Pelletier and Francine Kay on Piano. This concert will present a variety of Russian musical works in the Romantic style that are tied, in one way or another, to the great “Father of Russian literature,” Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837). In addition to song settings of Pushkin’s poems by composers including Mikhail Glinka, Sergei Rachmaninov, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Alexander Dargomyzhsky, Nikolai Medtner, and others, the program will include solo instrumental and chamber works by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Mily Balakirev and Glinka. Translations of all song texts will be provided. Ms. Pelletier and Ms. Kay are acclaimed musicians who have performed as soloists and in ensembles in many elite venues throughout the world; they are both on the music faculty at Princeton University. There will be a lecture/demonstration on Thursday, September 13 at 4:30, at which the performers will discuss their process in putting together this all-Russian and all-Pushkin musical program, how they chose the repertoire, and their creative and musical discoveries along the way, free, Studzinski Recital Hall, Bowdoin College, 12 Campus Road South, Brunswick. Sept. 14, Friday, 7:30pm, “Peppino D’Agostino,” a native of Italy, D’Agostino has made his considerable international mark as a musical artist on the guitar since he arrived in America 33 years ago. In 2017 Guitar Player Magazine listed him as one of the 50 transcendent superheroes of the acoustic guitar. The CD “Every Step of The Way” was awarded by Acoustic Guitar’s People’s Choice Awards with a Bronze medal for Best Acoustic Album of All Time. His signature Seagull acoustic guitar has been voted among the ten best signature guitars by Guitar Player magazine. Peppino gives guitar workshops, master classes and seminars worldwide. To date Peppino has recorded 18 CD’s, performed in over 33 countries at international festivals and concert halls. He has shared the stage with such greats as Larry Carlton, Eric Johnson, Tommy Emmanuel, Leo Kottke, Martin Taylor, Roland Dyens, David Tanenbaum and many more. Sept. 14, Friday, 8pm, “Novel Jazz,” featuring music of the iconic Duke Ellington and his equally iconic musical collaborator, Billy Strayhorn. Novel Jazz is a Maine-based group, now in their 14th season of concerts around Maine and New England. Their mission is to share the music and stories of these two giants of jazz who wrote some 3000 compositions over their musical careers, two percent of which represents the well-known standards and 98% of which most have never heard. They’ll perform standard tunes from the Ellington/Strayhorn repertoire plus newly arranged compositions that they have unearthed in the Ellington Archives of the Smithsonian Museum of American History in Washington D.C., some of which have not been heard in decades. The band has rearranged these pieces for the septet, dusted them off and given them a 21st century sound, all of their own, The Frontier Café Theater, 14 Maine Street, Mill 3, Fort Andross, Brunswick.
