“Windjammer Festival,” Camden Public Landing, Camden

Aug. 30-Sept. 2, Thursday-Sunday, 1pm/Thursday music begins, “Thomas Point Beach Bluegrass Festival,” performers Include The Earls of Leicester presented by Jerry Douglas, The Legendary Larry Sparks, The Gibson Brothers, Balsam Range, Sierra Hull, and many, many more. The Thomas Point Beach Bluegrass Festival has solidified itself as a premiere event for both bluegrass aficionados and those new to the genre. It is recognized internationally for its fine line-up and beautiful venue. Music starts at 1 pm Thursday, and 10 am Friday, Saturday and Sunday. When the Stage Show is over, the best is yet to come, with the acoustic performances by the fire and under the stars and the best field picking anywhere. Aug. 31-Sept. 1, Friday-Saturday, 9am/Fri. events begin, “Windjammer Festival,” the harbor will be filled with the sails and masts of nearly two dozen windjammers and schooners. Friday, Aug. 31, brings the launch of Camden’s 25th annual maritime celebration, the Camden Windjammer Festival, which features the largest gathering of windjammers in the northeast. The festival offers two full days of family-friendly events, spirited competitions and nautical exhibits that can only be experienced on Labor Day Weekend in Camden. This year’s Festival will have an expanded schedule Friday — with vendors, exhibits and competitions — and end Saturday night with the Harbormaster’s Dance Party on the public landing. In addition to the arrival of the fleet into Camden Harbor throughout the afternoon Friday, the day’s events will include the start of the Build-a-Boats, Radio Controlled Boat Races, Displays of Maritime Traditions and Crafts, a Lobster Hauling Demonstration, Treasure Hunt, Nautical Dog Show, the annual Bay Winds North Wind Ensemble Concert at Harbor Park, the Schooner Talent Show and Fireworks over the Harbor. Saturday will include the Camden Rotary Club Pancake Breakfast fundraiser, First Fish Relay Race, Pirate Activities and Demonstrations, West Bay Rotary Club Chowder, Children’s Drawing Class with Buckley Smith, Schooner Open House, Lobster Crate Race, Build-a-Boat Parade and Race, the Boat Parade Finale and the Harbormaster’s Dance Party, Camden Public Landing, 2 Public Landing, Camden. Aug. 31, Friday, 5pm, “Mushroom Foray,” this foraging experience, hosted by the Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust and led by Louis Giller of North Spore Mushroom Company, will begin with a concise intro to Mycology in order to give participants a basic understanding of the fungal life cycle, structures, and role in the environment. We’ll zoom in on a few choice edible species that we hope to find during our time in the woods. Before heading out, we’ll talk a bit about conscientious foraging techniques. What you find, you keep! That is unless it is a large enough amount that it makes sense to share. Aug. 31, Friday, 7:45pm, “Accordionist Marianna Filippi,” Another night at the Camden Opera House Blue Café! Marinna Filippi received her Bachelors of Music in music composition from the Ryal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, Wales. Her musical language is inspired by the music of Maurice Ravel and Japanese film composer Joe Hisaishi. Marianna has always harbored a love of scoring for theatre and film and has been commissioned to score theatrical productions including most notably the adaption of Lars Von Trier’s film “Dogville”, performed at the Burton Theatre, and Bruce Guthrie’s “Man to Man”, which premiered at the Welsh Millennium Centre in Cardiff. Blue Café is a new intimate performance space on the 3rd floor of the Camden Opera House, showcasing performances you won’t see anywhere else! Doors open at 7 pm.
