“Novel Jazz: Music of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn,” Skidompha, Damariscotta

Aug. 9, Thursday, 7:30pm, “DaPonte String Quartet Summer Series II: What the Light was Like,” features the world premiere of String Quartet No. 8 by Richard Danielpour, a renowned composer who has written for such artists as Frederika von Stade and Yo Yo Ma. The piece is based on a poem of the same name by Maine poet Amy Clampitt, and will feature guest reader Gary Lawless. Aug. 10, Friday, 7pm, “Novel Jazz: Music of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn,” the performance will feature Barney Balch (trombone), Dave Clarke (guitar), Herb Maine (acoustic bass), Michael Mitchell (trumpet), Mickey Felder (piano), Bill Manning(drums) and David Harris (alto saxophone). This evening will continue the band’s 14th year at Skidompha. Aug. 12, Sunday, 5pm, “Jazz on the Water-Creative Ensemble Collective,” Bay Chamber Concerts presents: A FREE outdoor jazz performance on picturesque Rockport Harbor. An ensemble of artists from around the world come together to play for the Creative Ensemble Collective. Their program this year features original arrangements of blues, jazz and popular classics from some of the great songwriters of the last 50 years.
