June 8, Friday, 7:30pm, “Chris Humphrey Big Band: Bassie and Ellington, Together Again,” Chris Humphrey Big Band returns to City Theater after last year’s immensely popular show “Tribute to the Rat Pack.” This time, they’ll be playing the music of Count Basie, known for such favorites as One O’clock Jump, Jumpin’ at the Woodside, and April in Paris, and Duke Ellington, famous for the hits Take the A Train, It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing, and Mood Indigo. June 13, Wednesday, 6:30pm, “Rambling Richard,” entertains and informs in a program called “Songs and Stories from World War 1: One hundred years later”. Richard reviews the major events of the war and sings the songs that were popular in the day, accompanying himself on guitar, banjo, and baritone ukulele. Further, he tells interesting stories of how the songs related to the life and times of Americans in that era. And the songs have remained familiar and beloved to this day. Songs like: “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” “Over There,” “For Me and My Gal,” and “How You Gonna’ Keep ‘em Down on the Farm.” A retired professor, Richard Kruppa is a member of the New England Foundation for the Arts.
