May 18, Friday, 7:30pm, “Performing Musical Art of Indonesia,” the 2017–18 artist residency of Darsono, a prominent Javanese gamelan musician and master puppeteer, culminates with this performance of Indonesian shadow puppetry supported by gamelan music performed by students in the Short Term course “Performing Musical Art of Indonesia,” free, tickets required, Olin Concert Hall, Bates College, 75 Russell Street, Lewiston. May 19, Saturday, 1pm, “Hallowell Waterfront History Tour,” historian Sam Webber will conduct a waterfront history tour. The tour will cover over 200 years of Kennebec River commerce from the Joppa section of lower Hallowell to Hinkley Point. The tour will conclude at Granite City Park in Hallowell. The tour is sponsored by the Down With The Crown committee which is supporting downtown Hallowell during the Water Street road construction project, Waterfront Boat Launch, Hallowell. May 19, Saturday, 1pm, “Wildflower Walk & Talk,” explore the flower life cycle from seed to blossom. By examining models, pressed flowers, and hopefully the real living wildflowers around the museum grounds, we will learn how flowers attract pollinators, create habitat, help conserve water and reduce erosion—as well as providing a welcome change in the spring landscape, $3, $1/youth, L.C. May 19, Saturday, 7pm, “Katahdin Valley Boys,” one of Maine’s most popular and respected bluegrass bands, the Katahdin Valley Boys, will be performing at the Vienna Union Hall in Vienna, Maine. The Katahdin Valley Boys take pride in presenting audiences with top quality traditional and contemporary Bluegrass and Gospel music including numerous original tunes since 1998. Each member brings many years of experience and professional showmanship to the band’s hard driving, traditional Bluegrass sound. Their repertoire features tight harmonies and smooth solos. The Boys are unique in that all five band members are featured instrumentally and vocally in each set of every show. May 19-20, Saturday and Sunday, 7:30pm/Sat, 3pm/Sun, “Favorites from the Great American Songbook: Music of Gershwin and Porter,” the jazzy blues sounds of George Gershwin and Cole Porter will echo through the Gendron Franco Center’s performance hall. These songs written for musical theater and movies between the 1920’s and 1950’s are characterized by witty lyrics and delightfully surprising rhymes. With titles like “I Get a Kick Out of You,” “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” and “Just One of Those Things” by Cole Porter and “ ’S Wonderful,” “They Can’t Take That Away From Me,” and “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off” by George Gershwin, everyone will want to sing along. It’s hard to believe that almost a century has gone by since these two celebrated giants of the music world composed so many popular songs. May 22, Tuesday, 6:30pm, “Simons sand Goodwin Acoustic Folk Concert,” Bob Simons and Renee Goodwin have known each other for more than 40 years, meeting when they were both involved in the great folk music scene of the 60’s. Joining forces in 2006, they’ve been performing Americana music ever since, including soft rock, country, blues, pop standards and, of course, both traditional and contemporary folk. Simons and Goodwin have performed here at Lithgow several times over the last two decades, always to appreciative audiences, and we are excited to welcome them back again, Lithgow Public Library, 45 Winthrop Street, Augusta.
