Apr. 26-28, Thursday-Saturday, 7:30pm, “Educating Rita,” Rita (Jennifer Porter) a witty and down-to-earth working-class hairdresser from Liverpool, in a courageous break for personal freedom, signs up for an adult education class, and finds herself under the grudging tutelage of Frank (Dana Packard) a cynical, alcoholic English professor. Bursting with curiosity and stymied by circumstance, Rita idealizes the privileged academic world of which she so longs to be a part. Frank, a failed poet, long-since disillusioned by what he sees as the charade of academia, smothers his bitterness with booze and a talent for mockery. Rita’s exuberance brings much needed air, and even joy, into Frank’s staid world, and the friendship that develops between the unlikely pair educates them both in unexpected ways, $20, $18/seniors and students, 4/26/pay-what-you-can, Saco River Theatre, 28 Salmon Falls Road, Bar Mills. May 1, Tuesday, 6:30pm, “The Rescue of the USS Squalus Submarine,” David Ramsay, local historian, narrator, and storyteller will talk about The Rescue of the USS Squalus Submarine (SS-192): the most famous submarine rescue in US Naval history. On the morning of May 23, 1939, the submarine USS Squalus slipped beneath the storm-tossed surface of the Atlantic on a sea trial. Minutes into the maneuver, she began flooding uncontrollably. The boat sank to the ocean floor nine miles off the New Hampshire coast, trapping 59 men on board. For some of the Squalus crew, May 23, 1939 would be carved on their headstones. For others, it would mark a 39-hour ordeal they would live with for the rest of their lives. And for a hastily-assembled Navy rescue team rushed to New Hampshire, it would be forever remembered as the date they launched an unprecedented rescue mission that stretched their abilities to new extremes. No submarine rescue had ever succeeded beyond 20 feet of water – the Squalus was down 240 feet. The Navy team had to use new methods that had existed only in theory before that day, free, Louis B. Goodall Memorial Library, 952 Main Street, Sanford. FMI: 207-324-4714, www.lbgoodall.org.
