Apr. 19, Thursday, 5:30pm, “Anatomy of Gravestones, lecture,” Southern Maine’s early cemeteries are rich with folk art. Beautifully hand-carved gravestones created by local stonecutters are readily found throughout our region. But what do the gravestone symbols — urns & willows, skulls & crossed bones, and pointing fingers — really mean? In this heavily-illustrated presentation, cemetery historian and author Ron Romano will describe the anatomy of a gravestone, discuss the types of materials found in our burial grounds and explain the meanings of dozens of gravestone icons. Light refreshments will be served, $5, free/members, Brick Store Museum, 117 Main Street, Kennebunk. FMI: 207-985-4802, www.brickstoremuseum.org.

Apr. 20-22, Friday-Sunday, 7:30pm/Fri. and Sat, 2:30pm/Sun, “Educating Rita,” Rita (Jennifer Porter) a witty and down-to-earth working-class hairdresser from Liverpool, in a courageous break for personal freedom, signs up for an adult education class, and finds herself under the grudging tutelage of Frank (Dana Packard) a cynical, alcoholic English professor. Bursting with curiosity and stymied by circumstance, Rita idealizes the privileged academic world of which she so longs to be a part. Frank, a failed poet, long-since disillusioned by what he sees as the charade of academia, smothers his bitterness with booze and a talent for mockery. Rita’s exuberance brings much needed air, and even joy, into Frank’s staid world, and the friendship that develops between the unlikely pair educates them both in unexpected ways, $20, $18/seniors and students, Saco River Theatre, 28 Salmon Falls Road, Bar Mills.
