Apr. 19, Thursday, 6:30pm, “Author Anne O’Regan,” in 2010, Anne O’Regan left her home in Boston and traveled west to do what, on average, only 300 people accomplish each year. Starting in Campo, California (on the Mexican border), she backpacked north for 2,650 miles on the Pacific Crest Trail. Traveling through California, Oregon and Washington, she completed her thru-hike five months later in Manning Park, Canada. Join us as Anne shares tales from the trail and offers a unique visual presentation gleaned from more than 3,000 photographs taken along the way, free, Gray Public Library, 5 Hancock Street, Gray. Apr. 20-22, Friday-Sunday, 7:30pm/Fri. and Sat, 5pm/Sun, “The Importance of Being Earnest,” Oscar Wilde’s most brilliant tour de force, a witty and buoyant comedy. This superb satire is one of the funniest plays in the English language – the delightful repartee and hilarious piercing of hypocrisy and pomposity will make you laugh out loud. Two young carefree dandies, Algernon Moncrieff and the utterly reliable John (Jack) Worthing, lead double lives to court the attentions of the exquisitely desirable Gwendolyn Fairfax and Cecily Cardew. The gallants grapple with the riotous consequences of their deceptions, as well as with the formidable Lady Bracknel, and with a stage set for clever manipulations and hilarious confusion, being earnest takes on a whole new meaning! Please arrive at least 15-30 minutes early, later arrivals are seated at the discretion of the House Manager, $8/students, $12/seniors, $16/general public, Russell Hall, USM, 37 College Avenue, Gorham. FMI: 207-780-5151, usm.maine.edu/theatre.
Apr. 20-22, Friday-Sunday, 7:30pm/Fri. and Sat, 2pm/Sun, “Harvey,” a Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy by Mary Chase, is the story of a perfect gentleman, Elwood P. Dowd, and his best friend, Harvey — a pooka, who is a six-foot tall, invisible rabbit. When Elwood begins introducing Harvey around town, his embarrassed sister, Veta Louise, and her daughter, Myrtle Mae, determine to commit Elwood to a sanitarium. A mistake is made, however, and Veta is committed rather than Elwood! Eventually, the mistake is realized, and a frantic search begins for Elwood and the invisible pooka, which ends with Elwood appearing, voluntarily, at the sanitarium. In the end, however, Veta realizes that she loves her brother and his invisible his best friend just as they are, and doesn’t want either of them to change, $12-$14, Schoolhouse Art Center, 16 Richville Road, Standish. Apr. 21 and 22, Saturday and Sunday, 8pm/Sat, 2pm/Sun, “Opera Workshop Presents: ‘Girl in Six Beats’,” Opera Workshop students are collaborating with Opera Maine and The Telling Room to create a new opera composed by Daniel Sonenberg that will be premiered at USM and in various locations in the community during April. The opera, approximately thirty minutes in length, depicts a teenage girl’s internal journey of discovery through a purgatory-like dreamscape in the immediate aftermath of her attempt to end her own life. Prompted by her encounters in limbo with various opinionated characters all eager to design her eternal destiny, she asserts her own voice for the first time, and commits herself to life in order to restore her most important relationship – that with her mother. The opera is composed for five principal singers, a small chorus, and orchestrated for piano and small percussion (performed by the singers). In addition to this world premiere, the program will include opera scenes performed by USM Opera Workshop students, $8, $5/students and seniors, Corthell Concert Hall, USM, 37 College Avenue, Gorham.
