Doctor Henry Jekyll’s experiments with exotic “powders and tinctures” have brought forth his other self-Edward Hyde, a sensualist and villain-free to commit the sins Jekyll is too civilized to comprehend. When Hyde meets a woman who stirs his interest, Jekyll fears for her life and decides to end his experiments. Apr. 6-8, Friday-Sunday, 7pm/Fri, 2pm/Sat. and Sun, “Maine State Ballet presents ‘Alice in Wonderland’,” Based on the classic novel by Lewis Carroll, with a score gleaned from Alexander Glazunov’s “Raymonda” and Sir William Walton’s “Façade,” Alice in Wonderland is a critically acclaimed original ballet by Artistic Director Linda MacArthur Miele. It is one of the only narrated ballets in the Maine State Ballet repertoire, which makes it easy for young children to follow. Alice follows the White Rabbit down his hole and finds herself in an extraordinary fantasy world occupied by fanciful characters including the Cheshire Cat, the sly Caterpillar, the tap dancing Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, and the clever Knave of Hearts. She attends the Mad Hatter’s hilarious Tea Party, and she almost loses her head during the wildest game of croquet ever played. Apr. 7, Saturday, 11am, “Building Ballets-The Sleeping Beauty,” Portland Ballet’s latest installment of its Building Ballets series mixes performance, lecture, and demonstration in order to educate people about the performing arts and everything that goes into a production. Presented by artistic director Nell Shipman and the dancers of the Portland School of Ballet, the performance will walk the audience through the process of creating and performing a ballet. Apr. 7, Saturday, 7:30pm, “Gawler Family,” an evening of traditional fiddling and folk music rooted in Maine and New England traditions with soaring melodies and driving rhythms. This talented musical family includes celebrated fiddler, Ellen, trained in the traditions of French-Canadian, Maritime, Shetland and old time New England fiddlers; husband John, a masterful banjo and guitar player; daughter, Molly, a fiddler, banjo player and singer; and Molly’s husband, Lao playing flutes from around the world and adding rhythm to the band with his bodhran. Apr. 8, Sunday, 6:30pm, “Pete Kilpatrick Duo,” Maine based singer/songwriter Pete Kilpatrick grew up with a deep and resounding love of melody. With no formal training in music, Pete picked up the acoustic guitar at the age of 16 and began teaching himself how to play, crafting his own songs all while falling deeply in love with the process. Kilpatrick’s work is a blend of folk and pop rock music, and he has been named Maine’s Best Act and Best Vocalist four times in the Portland Best Music Awards. Pete has performed over 1,200 concerts across the country and has shared the stage with artists such as Dave Matthews Band, David Gray, Ray Lamontagne, The Barenaked Ladies, Guster, and O.A.R. Tyler Stanley studied music at the University of Southern Maine where he graduated with a degree in Jazz Performance, and is very active playing, recording, and writing with his recently formed group, Native Isles who will release their EP this summer. There will be a songwriter session hosted by Pete Kilpatrick and Tyler Stanley at 3:30pm. Come gain from their experience in crafting songs, succeeding in the music industry, and other lessons learned along the way.
