Feb. 2, Friday, 4-7pm, “Bates Arts Crawl,” now in its 8th year, this festive winter event is a campus-wide cornucopia of student achievement in the literary, performing and visual arts. Music includes a cappella singing in Commons, and steel pan and brass ensembles in Olin. In the visual arts, see animation projects, meet art majors in their studios and inspect ceramics for sale, all in Olin. Feb. 2, Friday, 5pm, “Honor Flight Maine Benefit,” a wonderful evening of music and dance as some of Maine’s most talented performers take to the stage once again providing music from all eras! It’s a fun night as entertainers and friends of Honor Flight Maine entertain and delight you with their amazing variety of talents, 5pm/social hour, 6pm/hor’doeuvre buffet, 7pm/show, $15, Le Club Calumet, 334 West River Road, Augusta. Feb. 2, Friday, 7pm, “State Street Traditional Jazz Band,” pays homage to music birthed at the turn of the 20th century. These enchanting sounds were heard then in New Orleans and throughout the Louisiana Delta region. After WWI, jazz moved north and inevitable began to change. Yet many greats kept it alive, like Original preservation Hall Jazz Band, Louis Armstrong and others. “This is not Dixieland,” the band declares, “nor is it straw hat music.” The show benefits the church as well as the Center for Wisdom’s Women, $16, First Universalist Church of Auburn, 169 Pleasant Street, Auburn. Feb. 2, Friday, 7pm, “Maine Event Comedy,” presents Boston’s Phoebe Angle. She’ll be joined by Mark Reilly, Sam Pelletier, Jed Bloom, and Mariel Cabral. Angle is a comedian with more than just fantastic hair. A rural Maine transplant, now living in Beantown, she entertains with a unique perspective, poking fun at everything from her rural upbringing, to urban public transportation, but mostly herself. She’s performed in the Chicago Woman’s Funny Fest, The Limestone Comedy Festival, and the Seattle International Comedy Competition. Reilly, who moonlights as a U.S. mail carrier, was a finalist in Portland’s Got Talent and recently performed at the Broken Record Show in the Wild West Comedy Festival in Nashville, Tennessee. Before moving to Maine, Pelletier cut his comedy teeth in Burlington, VT. He was part of the 2017 and 2016 Portland Comedy Festival, and the 2015 Green Mountain Comedy Festival. Bloom was a finalist at Empire’s Comedy Summer Classic in Portland. His goal as a comedian is to not get fired from his day job as a teacher. Feb. 2-4, Friday-Saturday, 7:30pm/Fri. and Sat, 2pm/Sun, “Steel Magnolias,” in Chinquapin, Louisiana, Truvy’s beauty salon is where all the ladies who are “anybody” go to have their hair done. Truvy and Annelle dispense shampoos and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, and eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, the local social leader, M’Lynn, and the prettiest girl in town, Shelby. Feb. 3, Saturday, 2pm and 6pm, “Magician Norman Ng,” the show is an exciting fusion of magic, comedy and audience participation. It features never before seen magic and laugh out-loud comedic situations. Ng combines original and amazing magic tricks with his unique style of storytelling, action, and audience interaction. Clever scripting, strategic blocking, and dynamic body movements are all hallmarks to Norman’s signature performing style.
