Jan. 7, Sunday, 2pm, “Peter Grimes,” Ogunquit Performing Arts continues its 2017-2018 Classic Film Series with a screening of Benjamin Britten’s massive Opera Peter Grimes. The film is a performance of Benjamin Britten’s grand opera masterpiece, with huge orchestra and chorus, starring Jon Vichers ast the eccentric fisherman persecuted by his village, and filmed in London’s Royal Opera House at Convent Garden. The tragic story revolves around the tormented title character, a fisherman who finds himself shunned by the rest of the fishing village, called the Borough. At once the protagonist and the anti-hero, grimes is gruff and unpopular, but the character is crafted with a certain degree of ambiguity, refreshments served, free, Ogunquit Performing Arts, Dunaway Center, 23 School Street, Ogunquit. Jan. 8, Monday, 1pm, “Drawing Class,” During the month of January a course in basic drawing will be offered at the library by local artist Mona Harmon. The classes will include discussion of materials, contour drawing, value studies, and composition. Students will makemany sketches in the learning process and then may focus on one final drawing. Mona Harmon has studied art at the University of Southern Maine and the Maine College of Art and has shown her work in many Maine exhibits. She also founded the Tuesday Art Guild.
