Nov. 16 and 17, Thursday and Friday, 7pm/Thurs, 7:30pm/Fri, “Seasons in the Sun: A Romantic Comedy, a heart-warming comedy about a widow and widower who begin meeting at the side by side graves of their deceased spouses. Simple talk turns into engaging conversations and eventually romance over the course of the four seasons. Set in the late 1940’s, a lively cast of characters including gamblers, showgirls, gangsters, and missionaries takes the audience from New York City to Havana, Cuba with lively songs and a dicey plot. Nov. 17-19, Friday-Sunday, 7pm/Fri. and Sat, 3pm/Sun, “The Sound of Music,” a heartwarming story set in 1930’s Austria about a young woman named Maria who is failing miserably in her attempts to become a nun. When the widowed Navy Captain Georg Von Trapp needs governess that can handle his seven mischievous children, Maria is given the job. Although the children initially resent her, she soon wins them over with her kindness, understanding, and sense of fun and brings much-needed joy to the Von Trapp family’s lives – even the Captain’s. He and Maria find themselves falling in love even though he is engaged to a Baroness and Maria is still a postulate. Their personal conflicts are soon overshadowed by world events as Austria is about to fall under the control of Germany and the Captain may be drafted into the German Navy and find himself forced to fight against his own country. Nov. 17, Friday, 8pm, “Portland Jazz Orchestra,” music professor Chris Oberholtzer leads Maine’s premier big band, the Portland Jazz Orchestra in a concert that features original compositions and arrangements by members of the band. The Portland Jazz Orchestra is a non-profit jazz organization dedicated to curating jazz in Portland, Maine and fostering the growth of musical experiences in the New England area. A large part of PJO’s mission is to inspire, educate and in turn, develop future jazz audiences for generations to come.
