The kids escape to a virtual world where they play a video game defending their neighborhood from zombies, while the parents struggle to maintain a connection to their children. Oct. 7, Saturday, 1pm, “15th Annual Old-Fashioned Outdoor Band Concert,” this concert kicks off the year-long celebration of America’s great artist, Leonard Bernstein, in the celebration “Bernstein at 100!” According to Bernstein biographer Humphrey Burton, “Bernstein saw Kennedy as a leader with outstanding intellectual gifts and a sympathy for the arts. Kennedy recognized Bernstein had something of his own inspirational qualities and speed at grasping issues, as well as a passion for promoting the arts.” Bernstein said of Kennedy, “Of all the political men that I have ever met, [he] was certainly the most moving and compassionate and lovable.” The newly elected President selected Bernstein to compose and conduct a fanfare for Kennedy’s Inaugural Gala. Bernstein soon became a regular presence in the Kennedy White House. In turn, the President and his wife attended the opening night of Candide. In a career spanning four decades, he has recorded 14 albums, had several hundred covers of his songs, and performed in clubs, concert halls and festivals across the US, Canada and Europe. He has appeared on numerous broadcasts, including National Public Radio’s A Prairie Home Companion. Oct. 8, Sunday, 6:30pm, “Diane Walsh, concert pianist,” Diane Walsh has been guest soloist with the American Symphony Orchestra and the orchestras of Austin, Delaware, Indianapolis, San Francisco, St. Louis and Syracuse, and toured with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s. Abroad, she appeared with the radio symphony orchestras of Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich and Stuttgart, as well as orchestras in Brazil, The Netherlands, The Czech Republic and Russia. Among the noted conductors with whom she has collaborated are Kazuyoshi Akiyama, David Amado, Guillermo Figueroa, Peter Bay, Leon Botstein, Michael Butterman, Grant Cooper, John Giordano, Stephen Gunzenhauser, Eliahu Inbal, Keith Lockhart, John Nelson, Roger Nierenberg, Kyle Wiley Pickett, Ranson Wilson and David Zinman.
