“Mallet Brothers’ Band,” Deertrees Theatre, Harrison

Sept. 1, Friday, 7pm, “Maeve Gilchrist, harpist,” Saco River Festival Association presents harpist/composer Maeve Gilchrist at the beautifully renovated Kezar Falls Theater. Filmmaker Silas Hagerty and friends have been hard at work to make the old theater a jewel in the community, and we are delighted that Silas generously agreed to host this special concert. Described by one critic as “a phenomenal harp player who can make her instrument ring with unparalleled purity”, Maeve Gilchrist has taken the Celtic harp to new levels of performance. Born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland, and currently based in Brooklyn, New York, Maeve‘s innovative approach to her instrument stretches its harmonic limits and improvisational possibilities. She is as at home as a soloist with an internationally renowned orchestra as she is playing with a traditional Irish folk group or using electronic augmentation in a more contemporary, improvisatory setting, free, Kezar Falls Theater, 21 Main Street, Porter. Sept. 1, Friday, 8pm, “Bruce Hornsby & Sonny Emory Duo,” Bruce Hornsby’s work displays a creative iconoclasm that’s been a constant in the artist’s two-and-a-half decade recording career. His commercial stock soared early on, when “The Way It Is”-the title track of his 1986 debut album-became one of the most popular songs on American radio. Despite his early mainstream success, Hornsby has pursued a more personal, idiosyncratic musical path, focusing on projects that sparked his creative interest, including collaborations with the Grateful Dead, Spike Lee, Ricky Skaggs, Don Henley, Ornette Coleman, Bob Dylan, Bela Fleck, Bonnie Raitt, Pat Metheny, and Robbie Robertson. Throughout his career Hornsby has maintained the integrity, virtuosity and artistic curiosity that have been hallmarks of his work from the start. His performance will offer a glimpse of a restless spirit who continues to push forward into exciting new musical terrain. A special intimate show with Bruce’s drummer Sonny Emory of Noisemakers and luck us, we get to see it, credit cards not accepted on site for food or beverage, $160pp $2/handling fee, Stone Mountain Arts Center, 695 Dug Way Road, Brownfield.
