Aug. 31, Thursday, 5pm-8pm, “Wiscasset Art Walk,” Garden Art in the Courtyard Exhibit Highlights August 31 Wiscasset Art Walk, SHED Talk on the Creamery Pier. A beautiful outdoor space in Wiscasset Village becomes a new venue for three-dimensional art. Thanks to the community spirit of Kasey and Jay McNamara, owners of In the Clover, the stone and brick courtyard behind their store at 85A Main St. will now be an exhibit space for sculpture, demos, and music. The inaugural exhibit is Garden Art in the Courtyard featuring specialty pieces to enhance the garden experience. Artist Nikki Pilgrim Describes Ritual of Painting at SHED Talk Presentation on Creamery Pier Follows the Art Walk. The Bath artist will exhibit and discuss her work with the public during SHED Talks at Dusk at 8:30 pm on Wiscasset’s Creamery Pier. Heavily influenced by her coastal surroundings, artist Nikki Pilgrim immerses herself in the ‘ritual of painting,’ using ornate color and pattern as she transfers her environment into her creative work. Pilgrim describes herself as “a maker. I am always compelled to be producing.” In addition to the natural environment, the artist says her work is influenced by “antiquity, folk, funk, pattern, and color… I relish my time spent at flea markets and in nature, both of which Maine is rich with. My found treasures, anything from drift wood off the beach, or a find from the flea, will often be incorporated into a painting,” free, Downtown, Main Street, Wiscasset. Participants in this unique tour will experience Andrew Wyeth’s world by examining the strong attraction the Olson House held for the artist for more than 30 years. The tour will begin with an intimate look at select Andrew Wyeth works at the Farnsworth Art Museum, and continue on for an in-depth tour of the Olson House. All will be taken by van through the Maine countryside to the Olson House, past landmarks relevant to Wyeth’s Maine subject matter. A comprehensive tour of the Olson House, a National Historic Landmark, and its surrounding grounds, will highlight the relationship that Andrew Wyeth had with the property. The Olson House is the subject of approximately 300 works of art by Andrew Wyeth, including his iconic tempera Christina’s World (1948), owned by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Wyeth’s drawings, watercolors and tempera paintings featuring Christina, her brother and the house itself occupied the artist from 1939 through 1968. Wyeth once remarked, “I just couldn’t stay away from there. I did other pictures while I knew them, but I’d always seem to gravitate back to the house … It was Maine.” Wyeth died in 2009 and is buried in a small cemetery within sight of the house. Tours are limited to 12 people per tour, reservations are recommended, $50, Wyeth Study Center Gallery, Union and Grace Streets, Rockland. FMI: 207-596-6457, www.farnsworthmuseum.org.
Sept. 1-3, Friday-Sunday, all day events, “Camden Windjammer Festival,” the harbor will be filled with the sails and masts of nearly two dozen windjammers and schooners. Friday, Sept. 1 brings the launch of Camden’s 24th annual maritime celebration, the Camden Windjammer Festival, which features the largest gathering of windjammers in the northeast. The festival offers three full days of family-friendly events, spirited competitions and nautical exhibits that can only be experienced on Labor Day Weekend in Camden. Settle in Friday afternoon, on a bench at the public landing, and watch as the windjammers parade into the harbor beginning at noon. Capt. Jim Sharp provides running commentary on the history and glory of each vessel as it makes its way to its berth at the public docks. The vessels are greeted one by one by the crowd, and each captain is gifted with a pineapple, a symbol of hospitality. During this time, a silent auction will be underway, with bidders vying to win dinner aboard a handful of the schooners that night. The evening includes an outdoor concert and schooner talent show in Harbor Park, and culminates with fireworks over the harbor. Saturday morning begins early with the Camden Rotary Club Pancake Breakfast. The Lobster Crate Race is Saturday’s highlight, and features contestants racing across a line of crates trying to avoid falling into the harbor. The First Fish Relay Race is another fun competition that has teams tossing slippery fish into a boat’s “hold” and then racing a short course to finish. The popular Build-A-Boat Contest has been modified this year, and will provide teams with boat kits to construct and decorate. Teams will test their boats’ seaworthiness and race to win on the final day of the Windjammer Festival. There will be kayak rides out to Curtis Island and back on both Saturday and Sunday, with the kayaks departing at twice daily. On Saturday, the Pirates of the Dark Rose will set up camp for the weekend in Harbor Park, where they will put on a big puppet show, demonstrate their weapons, fire canons and try to recruit pirates into their ranks. On Sunday, there will be a big pirate skirmish, complete with a diabolical visit by the S/V Must Roos. The town will need your help staving off the marauding pirate invasion, so pick up a sword, learn those pirate skills Saturday and learn them good! At noon on Saturday stop by the big tent for the West Bay Rotary Chowder Challenge. The Public Landing will play host to displays of maritime traditions and crafts, as well as an indoor display showcasing the windjammer, historical photos of Camden and a display from the Maine Lighthouse Museum. The schooners are open for tours both Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Camden Public Library will show the movie Captains Courageous, with scenes filmed in Camden and locals playing small parts. Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary will perform in concert Saturday night at the Opera House. On Sunday morning check out the Radio Controlled Boat Race, sign up for the Treasure Hunt and watch the lobster hauling demonstration. Then it’s time for the Build-a-Boat racers to test their creations on the water, followed by the Nautical Dog Show, the pirate ship’s arrival and then the Boat Parade Finale. Daysailing schooners will be sailing every day to get you out on Penobscot Bay for a couple of hours. Food and other vendors will be located on the public landing, with restaurants and stores open downtown during the Festival as well, Camden Public Landing, 2 Public Landing, Camden.
