Aug. 10, Thursday, 7:30pm, “Abraham Ross Organ Concert,” Abraham Ross of Holden, Maine performing music of Cėsar Franck, Horatio Parker, Charles-Marie Widor, and George Whitefield Chadwick. Abe performs regularly as a soloist and an ensemble player with special interests in early music and twentieth-century repertoire. He is currently completing the Masters of Music in Historical Performance at Oberlin Conservatory, where he studies organ with Jonathan Moyer and harpsichord with Mark Edwards, donations appreciated, St. John’s Catholic Church, 207 York Street, Bangor. Aug. 11-13, Friday-Sunday, 2pm/Sat. and Sun, 7pm/Fri. and Sat, “Nunsense,” live Production/Musical/Comedy, Nunsense follows the crazy antics of five nuns from the Little Sisters of Hoboken convent. When their cook accidentally serves up some tainted soup, 52 of the sisters are poisoned and die, leaving only five living nuns who were not at home the day of the toxic meal. When the convent’s first in charge, Reverend Mother Regina, splurges on a plasma TV, the sisters find themselves strapped for cash, as they still have four dead nuns to bury (whose bodies are being stored in the kitchen freezer!). Aug. 14, Monday, 7pm, “Lily Arbisser and Jason Wirth,” “Jason Wirth [spun] a gossamer web of unusual sounds on the piano,” writes the New York Times. A pianist, conductor, and vocal coach, Jason draws on his varied interests to bring new perspectives into his music-making. Jason was born in Minnesota, and performed on the piano extensively from a very young age, including appearances with the Moscow Philharmonic and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra as a soloist. His recording of Poulenc’s The Story of Babar, with international film star Michael Douglas narrating, has been released on the Naxos label. As a music director, Jason has led a number of varied projects including the Modern Opera Company’s production of Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitor and Utopia Opera’s recent double bill of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas and King Arthur (which he led from the harpsichord). Jason has a passion for contemporary music as well, and has performed with both the Center for Contemporary Opera and the award-winning new music choir Cantori New York in the last season. Educated at Mannes and the Yale School of Music, Jason is an expert performer of the operatic repertoire and has a deep love and affinity for art song, cabaret, musical theatre and jazz, $15, Surry Arts at the Barn, Cross Road, Surry.
