Apr. 13, Thursday, 6pm, “Maine Authors John Ford and Mark Nickerson,” Join Ford, a retired game warden, and Nickerson, a retired Maine State Trooper, for a night that will leave you laughing, while at the same time pointing out the dangers and hazards of being a Maine game warden and Maine State Trooper. Ford and Nickerson have become two of Maine’s favorite storytellers, appearing at libraries and other venues across the state sharing their hilarious back-in-the-day stories of law enforcement. Ford has authored three books, “Suddenly the Cider Didn’t Taste So Good,” “This Cider Still Tastes Funny!,” and “Deer Diaries,” while Nickerson has written two books, “Blue Lights in the Night” and “Behind the Blue Lights”. Apr. 13, Thursday, 7:30pm, “Poet Dan Beachy-Quick,” the University of Maine at Farmington is proud to present award-winning poet, author and Guggenheim fellow Dan Beachy-Quick as the next reader in its notable Visiting Writers Series. Sponsored by the UMF Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program, the reading will take place in The Landing in the UMF Olsen Student Center. Beachy-Quick is the author of five books of poetry, “North True South Bright” (2003), “Spell” (2004), “Mulberry” (2006), “This Nest, Swift Passerine” (2009) and “Circle’s Apprentice” (2011, winner of the Colorado Book Award in Poetry). He is also the author of “Whaler’s Dictionary” (2008) a book of interlinked meditations on Herman Melville’s “Moby-Dick,” and “Wonderful Investigations: Essays, Meditations and Tales” (2012). Two book-length collaborative projects are also available: “Conversitie”s (2012, with Srikanth Reddy) and “Work from Memory” (2012, with Matthew Goulish). According to Lyn Hejinian, poet essayist and publisher, “Over the course of six critically acclaimed books—including a compelling meditation on Moby-Dick—Dan Beachy-Quick has established himself as “one of America’s most significant young poets.” His poems have appeared widely in such journals as The Boston Review, The New Republic, Fence, Poetry, Chicago Review, VOLT, Colorado Review, and New American Writing. His essays and reviews have appeared in The Southern Review, The Poker, The Kenyon Review, The New York Times, The Denver Quarterly, Interim and elsewhere. He is the recipient of a Lannan Foundation Residency and has been a finalist for the Colorado Book Award, The William Carlos Williams Award, and the PEN/USA Literary Award in Poetry, free, Olsen Student Center, UMF, 111 South Street, Farmington. Apr. 14-15, Friday-Saturday, 7:30pm, “Molded by the Flow: A Poetic, Visual and Musical Narrative,” a collaborative creation of theatre, music and visual art with internationally-acclaimed artists Paul Dresher & Rinde Eckert, and USM students, faculty and staff. Inspired by Southern Maine’s rich natural and human history, Molded by the Flow is a poetic, visual and musical narrative exploring how the state’s rivers, ocean, weather, plants and animals have inspired diverse groups of people to inhabit the area, and thereby shape the landscape and the history of Maine. Apr. 15, Saturday, 1pm, “National Theatre Live: Hedda Gabler,” “I’ve no talent for life.” Just married. Buried alive. Hedda longs to be free…Hedda and Tesman have just returned from their honeymoon and the relationship is already in trouble. Trapped but determined, Hedda tries to control those around her, only to see her own world unravel. Tony Award-winning director Ivo van Hove (A View from the Bridge at the Young Vic Theatre) returns to National Theatre Live screens with a modern production of Ibsen’s masterpiece. Apr. 15, Saturday, 7:30pm, “The Ale House String Band,” The Ale House String Band was a happy accident caused by the artistic whirlpool that is Waldoboro, ME. Oren Robinson is a classically trained vocalist, Brian Dunn is a wandering soul who picked up music along the way, and April Reed-Cox has a Masters degree in Music Performance.
