Mar. 9, Thursday, 5pm, “Book Talk: North Pond Hermit,” unless you have been living in the woods for the past several decades, you likely have heard of Central Maine’s North Pond Hermit. Author Michael Finkel has written a book about the North Pond Hermit called “The Stranger in the Woods: The Extraordinary Story of the Last True Hermit.” Mr. Finkel will share his new book at a free book launch event. The reception is sponsored by the Colby College Center for the Arts & Humanities and will include free light refreshments by the Last Unicorn. Beginning at 6p in the Waterville Opera House, Mr. Finkel will then give a presentation that will include photographs, video clips, as well as a question and answer session. The author will sign books immediately following this presentation. This event is free, but tickets are required. Free tickets can be picked up at any Bull Moose location or at the Waterville Public Library, 73 Elm Street, Waterville. Books can be pre-ordered at any Bull Moose location. Mar. 11, Saturday, 12:55pm, “The Met: La Traviata,” Sonya Yoncheva sings one of opera’s most beloved heroines, the tragic courtesan Violetta, a role in which she triumphed on the Met stage in 2015, opposite Michael Faviano as her lover, Alfredo, and Thomas Hampson as his father, Germont. Carmen Giannattasio sings later performances of the title role opposite Atalla Ayan, with the great Plácido Domingo as Germont. Nicola Luisotti conducts. Mar. 11, Saturday, 7:30pm, “Barber Violin Concerto,” Boston-based violin virtuoso Eunae Koh joins the CSO in the haunting and poetic violin concerto by American composer Samuel Barber. The concert also features the world premiere of an interactive work for computer and orchestra by composer and Colby Music Professor Jonathan Hallstrom. Felix Mendelssohn’s fifth symphony, “Reformation,” closes the program with a tribute to Martin Luther’s well-known chorale “Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott” (“A Mighty Fortress is Our God”), free, Lorimer Chapel, Colby College, 4000 Mayflower Hill Drive, Waterville. Mar. 12, Sunday, 2pm and 4pm, “Carnival of the Animals,” the Pineland Suzuki School’s annual benefit concert. Violin, viola and cello students, from beginners through advanced students, will perform. The early concert will feature younger children with puppets and dancing; a joyful and humorous musical celebration of children’s friendship with animals. The 4:00 concert features the Snow Pond Youth Symphony and advanced students of Pineland Suzuki School.
