Mar. 3, Friday, 7pm, “Change the Story, Fix the Future,” understanding the stories that perpetuate inequality and hold us back. Presentation and discussion led by Chuck Collins author of Born on Third Base. Mar. 3-4, Friday-Saturday, 7:30pm, “Exchange Street,” sunrise to sunset in Portland, Maine. Like many picturesque old port towns, it grapples with very real, modern issues. EXCHANGE STREET zeroes in on hot summer day at the intersection of Exchange and Middle Streets. From six in the morning to midnight, we get a glimpse into the lives of the residents of this busy block told in a series of seven stories. A sampling of stories from Exchange Street include: Tales from the Zoo: Sammy, who lost his wife a few years earlier, comforts himself with the company of two old friends at the local Starbucks at daybreak. No Stopping 8 am to 6 pm: Emma, in trouble at school, has to bring her single mom to the principal’s office. While sparks fly between the two, help comes from an unexpected source. Bobby Darin’s Got Nothin’ on Me: Even though his wife is seriously ill, Sal still has to open his hot dog stand and commiserates with an old war buddy. Mickey and Maude at the Movies: A college professor’s lighthearted date with her boyfriend from the mailroom takes on new meaning when the head of her department sees them together. Mar. 5, Sunday, 2pm, “The Hunters,” classic film series, 1958 big-screen American war/ adventure film loosely adapted from the novel, The Hunters, by James Salter. Produced and directed by Dick Powell, it stars Robert Mitchum as a flight commander during the Korean War, and Robert Wagner as a cocky young pilot assigned to his flight. Lee Philips, May Britt, Richard Egan, and John Gabriel complete the cast of this romantic adventure, which features spectacular flying sequences as well as interpersonal tensions on and off the ground. Major Cleve “Iceman” Saville (Robert Mitchum), a veteran World War II fighter ace returns to combat in the Korean War, eager to fly an F-86 Sabre fighter. His commanding officer (Richard Egan) assigns him command of a flight. Among his pilots is a troubled, insecure, heavy-drinking pilot (Lee Philips), with whose neglected wife Mitchum is already in love. Adding to his problems is the arrival of a brash new young replacement, (Robert Wagner), who ignores command orders in the sky. The film was produced and directed by Dick Powell. Mar. 5, Sunday, 3pm, “Queen of Katwe,” winter film series, a Ugandan girl sees her world rapidly change when she is introduced to the game of chess and instilled with the confidence and determination she needs to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion. Mar. 6, Monday, 6pm, “Beginners’ Swing Dance Class,” Lindy Maine is teaching a beginner swing dance class starting March 6. You’ll get 6 weeks of beginner 6-Count/East Coast Swing Dancing, from scratch, with clear instruction and lots of time to practice. The bonus? A little exercise and you’ll meet some new people! After class, there is a free practice session from 7-8 pm. You don’t need any previous dance experience and you don’t need a partner. Mar. 7, Tuesday, 10:30am, “War of Two, Book Talk,” Michael Behnke will present “War of Two” by John Sedgwick, subtitled “Alexander Hamilton, Aaron Burr, and the Duel that Stunned the Nation.” Despite Hamilton’s current Broadway fame, few people know about his political and personal convictions. Sedgwick provides critical insight into the true motivation for the duel. Matthew Pearl, “New York Times” bestselling author of “The Last Bookaneer” calls this book “an explosive historical narrative. With Sedgwick’s deft, clever writing ….the world of the Founders becomes as gripping as any novel”. Michael Behnke, a York resident, is the former Dean of Admission at Tufts and M.I.T. and Vice President of the University of Chicago.
