Mar. 3, Friday, 8pm, “The Sweetback Sisters and Girls Guns and Glory,” the rollicking country swing of the Sweetback Sisters is as infectious as it is heartbreaking. Their charismatic charm harkens back to the golden era of both the silver screen cowgirl and the ersatz cowboy stars of local UHF TV kiddie shows. That whimsical exterior is wrapped around a core of deeply felt love for traditional country music styles and a palpable joy in playing and singing together. Like their pseudo-sister role models, the Davis Sisters, the Sweetback Sisters sing country songs in close, surrogate-sister harmony and of course their signature matching dresses. Their repertoire combines several of the Sisters’ passions — country music from before they were born and new interpretations of those traditions — to create a fresh take on what it means to be country. Forging its sound from the raw materials of rockabilly, country and other American traditions, tempered by a unique musical and lyrical approach. For the past eight years, Boston’s rising stars have been making a name for themselves through relentless touring, the release of five critically acclaimed records, and a slew of awards. Bandmembers Ward Hayden (vocals/guitar), Paul Dilley (electric and upright bass/piano), Josh Kiggans (drums/percussion), and Chris Hersch (lead guitar/banjo) find musical inspiration from early ’50s rock ‘n’ roll icons such as Chuck Berry, Eddie Cochran, and Buddy Holly, as well as country greats like Hank Williams and Johnny Cash, $35, credit cards not accepted on site for food or beverage, Stone Mountain Arts Center, 695 Dug Way Road, Brownfield. Mar. 4, Saturday, 6pm, “Double Header: Gallery & Performance,” Boston-based visual artists, Jared Williams and Anya Smolnikova, kick off the night with a new gallery of works. They bring to Denmark “Murmurations,” a stunning display of collaboratively developed drawings, paintings and video installation. The term “murmuration” refers to the flocking behavior in starlings. The artists seek to work collaboratively like starlings intuitively shift and re-direct without any single leader. View the work and engage with the artists from 6 to 7:30 pm. Refreshments will be provided free-of-charge! Then, stick around for a unique performance experience brought to us by Chicago visual artist, Lydia Smith, and Chinese dance artist, Sujie Zhu. During a weeklong residency in Denmark, the artists continue to explore international traditionals of grief. The artists seek to set differing rituals and ideas next to one another for aesthetic and emotional investigation, researching for example Denmark’s 29 cemetaries and the “seven weeks of mourning” from Sujie’s hometown of Gaoyou, China. At 7:30 pm, Lydia and Sujie will facilitate an interactive performance based on their research. Audience members are invited to bring any items to contribute to the community altar and ritual, $10, Denmark Arts Center, 50 West Main Street, Denmark. FMI: 207-452-2412, www.denmarkarts.org.
