“Bold Riley,” North Windham Union Church

Feb. 9-11, Thursday-Saturday, 7pm/Thurs, 7:30pm/Fri. and Sat, 2pm/Sat, “Shedding Light,” begins at dusk on December 22, 1999, just before the millennium. An African-American cable repairman in a Manhattan high-rise condominium apartment to fix the cable reception of a high-strung, Jewish woman. What begins as awkward banter builds into increasingly challenging and personal questions about race and religion, both for the man, still recovering from old wounds, and the woman, who is having a crisis of faith after a traumatic year. Feb. 9-12, Thursday-Sunday, 7:30pm/Thurs, Fri. and Sat, 2pm/Sat. and Sun, “Footloose,” the story of Ren McCormack, a teenage boy from Chicago. He and his mother move to the small town of Bomont after his father abandons them. Upon arriving, Ren finds himself at odds with most of the town, including the Reverend Bomont. The Reverend has convinced the town to outlaw dancing, which Ren finds unbelievable. With the help of the Ariel (the Reverend’s daughter) and Willard (a country hick who becomes his best friend), Ren convinces the Reverend to let the teenagers dance, and in the process helps the town to heal from a tragedy that affected them all, $10, $8/students and seniors, McCormack Performing Arts Center, Gorham High School, 41 Morrill Ave, Gorham. Feb. 9, Thursday, 8pm, “Stone Mountain Twilight Music Hour,” hosted by owner and singer songwriter Carol Noonan, a night to showcase some new talent, and some old that you should know about. Feb. 10, Friday, 6:30pm, “Saccarappa Boys and a Girl,” Led by Westbrook native and fiddler and guitarist, Lou Mathieu, Saccarappa Boys and a Girl are gaining notoriety in southern Maine for their energetic shows featuring great harmony singing and tight instrumental work. The band plays traditional music including bluegrass, country, and old-time songs. All ages welcome. Feb. 11, Saturday, 7pm, “Bold Riley,” an evening of folk music. Bold Riley started as a simple music project among friends, but quickly gained momentum thanks to the group’s contagious enthusiasm and commitment to bringing joyful acoustic folk music to the greater community. Comprising members from all over southern Maine, the group is known for its soaring vocal harmonies and diverse instrumentation. Fiddle, guitar, banjo, accordion, bass and an ever-expanding list of percussion allow Bold Riley to provide a wide range of music to its listeners.
