“National Bird Feeding Month,” Audubon at Gilsland Farm, Falmouth

Feb. 2-4, Thursday-Saturday, 7pm/Thurs, 7:30pm/Fri. and Sat, “Kiss the Moon, Kiss the Sun,” an emotionally-charged play that explores the relationships between a son and his mother, and a woman, that is about to have her life changed by them both. Feb. 3, Friday, 7pm, “DaPonte String Quartet: Dance Me to the End of Love,” The Quartet goes all-electric to help celebrate Valentine’s Day with a selection of love songs old and new, as well as classical pieces like you’ve never heard them. Feb. 3, Friday, 8pm, “Tricky Britches,” Raised in Maine, cured on street corners and next to woodstoves, string-band Tricky Britches is a unique culmination of country, old timey, bluegrass, and rock. They’ve played festivals and concerts across the US, Europe, and Hawaii, always being shaped by those places, and using those experiences to shape their original music. The Portland Phoenix said it best, “In an age of auto-tune and manufactured music, Tricky Britches isn’t just a throwback – they’re a look forward ” I could not agree more, and they just keep getting better. Feb. 3, Friday, 8pm, “USM Faculty Concert Series: Portland Brass Quintet,” “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue” is a typical program for the Portland Brass Quintet including quintet staples by JS Bach, Victor Ewald and Morley Calvert, recent compositions by Kevin McKee and John Stevens, and familiar jazz standards. The Portland Brass Quintet is regularly heard throughout southern and central Maine. You’ve heard this quintet at public or private gatherings, at graduations at Colby, Bates, USM, the North Yarmouth Academy and the University of New England, in annual concerts with the Choral Art Society, Christmas with Cornils and every July 4th at the Bethel Historical Society. The quintet members are active brass teachers throughout New England. Feb. 4, Saturday, 10am-3pm, “Chinese New Year Celebration,” This always popular and exciting event is in its 27th year and is the oldest and largest Chinese New Year celebration in Maine. The celebration will open with a Lion Dance beginning shortly after 10:00 a. m. The performers will also perform and explain Lion Dances throughout the day in the gym. The feature event is the traditional Chinese dance performance by the students of CAFAM’s Chinese school which begins at 11:00 a. m. and ends at noon when the students will perform a Dragon Dance in the hallway. All day children can make Rooster related crafts in the gym where there will also be vendors selling books, Chinese teas, and other Chinese crafts and products. Chinese food will be for sale in the cafeteria. During the day there will be mahjong games and instruction in how to play mahjong as well a tai chi.
