Nov. 17-19, Thursday-Saturday, 7pm, “Rocky Horror Picture Show, Live,” The Barn Arts Collective will present an acclaimed production of the rock musical The Rocky Horror Show with a live band and a full cast of powerhouse performers in full costume – fishnets and heels included – delivering the story and score with wit, style and glamour. The Rocky Horror Show originally premiered in London in 1973 and inspired the cult classic film, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which still has midnight screenings across the country. Nov. 18, Friday, 12pm, “DaPonte String Quartet Lecture/Peformance: ‘Meaning in Music,’” Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953), String Quartet No. 2 in F Major, Op. 92, Allegro sostenuto, Adagio, Allegro, An intimate look at Prokofiev’s Second String Quartet. Program notes…Using excerpts from the Second Quartet, the Daponte will show how Prokofiev creates musical communication without words, through the use of tone-painting and musical quotations, about life in the Kabardino-Balkar region of the Caucasus mountains where he and other artists lived during their WWII evacuation from Moscow. The work’s first movement is a stirring march based on a rising four-note motif that is enriched by Prokofiev’s vivid impressions of life in the Caucasus, especially a euphoric love-song and a rich gallery of pictures, including both erotic dance and the alpen-horn calls of sheep-herders, free, Curtis Memorial Library 23 Pleasant St, Brunswick.
