Nov. 3-6, Thursday-Sunday, 7pm/Thursday, 7:30pm/Fri. and Sat, 3pm/Sunday, “Charley’s Aunt,” an 1892 farce in three acts written by Brandon Thomas. Charley and Jack love Amy and Kitty. Amy is about to go away, and Charley thinks he may miss his opportunity to ask for her hand. Then he discovers that his aunt, a Brazilian woman he hardly knows, is coming for lunch. How fortuitous! Now the aunt can chaperone while the boys ask the girls to marry them. Naturally, things don’t go as planned. Donna Lucia, the aunt, is late, and their friend, Lord Fancourt Babberley (Babbs) shows up in drag. He is convinced to pretend to be Donna Lucia, and a wild afternoon of mistaken identity, young love, old love, angry uncles, and one beautiful, exotic aunt ensues, $8, $6/students, Falmouth High School Theater, 74 Woodville Road, Falmouth. Nov. 5, Saturday, 8pm, “Southern Maine Symphony Orchestra,” From dawn over the mighty Volga river, to dawn over a simple frontier homestead in Appalachia, the Southern Maine Symphony Orchestra fall concert has something for everyone! Conducted by USM professor Robert Lehmann, the orchestra will present their fall concert at Gorham Middle School and will feature the USM School of Music’s newest faculty member, voice professor Mariana Mihai-Zoeter. Aaron Copland’s iconic “Appalachian Spring” and Mozart’s penultimate symphony, the great G minor Symphony No. 40, anchor the fall SMSO concert around which various operatic pieces make guest appearances. Otto Nicolai’s Overture to the Merry Wives of Windsor, which opens the concert, is a teaser for next spring’s fully staged production of the complete opera. Mussorgsky’s Prelude to the opera Khovanschina is a miniature gem or the Russian opera canon. We are also delighted to show off the USM School of Music’s newest faculty member and head of the vocal department, soprano Mariana Mihai-Zoeter, in the brilliant and virtuosic showstopper from Massenet’s opera Manon, $8/adults, $5/students, Gorham Middle School Auditorium, 106 Weeks Road, Gorham.
