Aug. 11-13, Thursday-Saturday, 8pm, ‘Death by Design,” Set during a weekend in an English country manor in 1932, Death by Design is a delightful and mysterious “mash-up” of two of the greatest English writers of all time (Agatha Christie and Noel Coward). Edward Bennett, a playwright, and his wife Sorel Bennett, an actress, flee London and head to Cookham after a disastrous opening night. But various guests arrive unexpectedly — a conservative politician, a fiery socialist, a nearsighted ingenue, a zany modern dancer — each with a long-held secret. When one of the guests is murdered, it’s left to Bridgit, the feisty Irish maid with a macabre interest in homicide, to solve the crime. Death by Design is more than homage — it’s a new classic, $17-$35, Lakewood Theater, 76 Theater Road, Madison. FMI: 207-474-7176, www.lakewoodtheater.org.
Aug. 12, Friday, 7:30pm, “Love Labour’s Lost,” the King of Navarre and his friends vow to spend three years in serious study, giving up sleep, food and women. In typical Shakespeare fashion, letters of love go misdirected and subplots abound-until a twist of fate makes the men keep their vows, see site for ticketing details, Cumston Hall, 796 Main Street, Monmouth.
