“Foxcroft Academy Alumni Jazz Band,” Next Generations Theater, Bangor

Aug. 11, Thursday, 5-8pm, “Cool Sounds of Summer Concert and Fresh Air Market,” The Rotating Taps is a four piece band from Bangor, ME. They’ve been friends since high school and have been playing music together just as long. Previously all four members were a part of a group called Sam and Yuri. They decided to change names after some arrangements in the band had changed. Yuri Trusty and Sam Chase both still share the lead vocals in the band. Mike Wellington plays the six string guitar. Jared Botting rocks the bass. Sam also plays drums. Yuri also plays keyboard. Their sound is often very eclectic but it lands somewhere in between pop rock and alternative folk with a funky hip hop backbone. They have been to many places together. These days you will mostly find them in historic downtown Bangor rocking out and promoting the cultural growth of such a wonderful city, Events will take place rain or shine. Aug. 11, Thursday, 7:30pm, “Organ Concert,” concert by Jacques Boucher with Sophie Poulin de Courval, saxophone, on Maine’s largest 19th-Century tracker-action pipe organ, E. & G. G. Hook’s magnificent Opus 288, at St. John’s Roman Catholic Church in Bangor. Boucher and Poulin de Courval from Montreal, Canada, will perform music of Jean-Baptiste Singelée, Denis Bédard, and Olivier Messian, St. John’s Catholic Church, 207 York Street, Bangor. Aug. 13, Saturday, 10am, “August Wildflower Walk-Pollination,” Meet at West Penjajawoc Grasslands at the end of Fox Hollow Lane to explore the wildflowers and learn about pollination with Maine Master Naturalist, Grace Bartlett. Aug. 13, Saturday, 10am-3pm, “Family Day at Hirundo Wildlife Refuge,” Participants are encouraged to bring fishing licenses and fishing rods for a day of family fishing. There will be presentations and interactive demonstrations throughout the day. License holders may participate in the refuge’s local fish count. Grilled hamburgers, hotdogs, fresh watermelon and lemonade will be available for purchase. Among events planned are meeting your local game warden, fly fishermen and expert fly-tier; ongoing electrofishing and fly-tying demonstrations; war canoe family paddle; ongoing fishing instruction and demonstration, $10/per vehicle, Hirundo Wildlife Refuge, Hudson Road, Old Town. Aug. 13, Saturday, 11am-2pm, “Kid’s Carnival and Car Show,” event will feature a barbecue with burgers and hot dogs, a car show and games, including a bounce house, ring toss, balloon pop, pick-a-duck, face painting, bottle throw, dunk tank, beanbag toss and more. Prizes will be awarded. Car show registration will take place 10-10:30 a.m. Trophies will be awarded for Best of the Decades, Best in Show and People’s Choice.
