“Old-Time Maple Sugaring,” Washburn-Norlands Living History Museum, Livermore

Mar. 24-26, Thursday-Saturday, 7pm/Thurs, 7:30pm/Fri. and Sat, 2:30pm/Sat, “The Tin Woman: A Play,” based on a true story, The Tin Woman is the powerful story of a woman who receives a heart transplant and her eventual meeting with the family of the donor. Instead of relishing life after her heart transplant, Joy is unsure whether she truly deserves a second chance. Meanwhile, Alice and Hank mourn the loss of their son, Jack, whose heart was used to save Joy. At a friend’s urging, Joy tracks down Jack’s family to find closure. But are Alice, Hank, and their daughter Sammy ready to accept Jack’s death and welcome Joy into their lives? Mar. 24, Thursday, 7pm, “These Shining Lives,” presented by Yarmouth High School Playmakers, a One Act play based on the true and touching story of four women who painted watch faces for the Radium Dial Factory in the 1920s and early 30s. Mar. 26-27, Saturday-Sunday, 9am-4pm, “Maine Maple Sunday Event,” a fun filled weekend of Maple and sample Maine’s Official State Sweetner. Learn the process of making maple syrup, sample syrup over ice cream. We also offer a full pancake breakfast (seating outside), maple syrup in many size containers, cotton candy, sugar candy, maple cream, fudge, cheese and pastries. For viewing, you can do a barn tour to see the animals, take an ox cart ride, see the blacksmith working in his shop, or stand by the fire watching the cast iron cauldrons boil sap as they did in the 1800’s. An auditioned choir made up of 40 mixed voices from Windham High School, the group gained international attention twenty years ago in 1996 by winning the Prize of Vienna at the 25th International Youth and Music Festival in Vienna, Austria. Mar. 27, Sunday, 9:30am-2pm, “Pancake Breakfast and Old-Time Maple Sugaring at Norlands,” celebrate Maine Maple Sunday at the Washburn-Norlands Living History Center in Livermore. Experience a late winter ritual done the old-fashioned way. Enjoy a hearty breakfast in the historic farmer’s cottage with fresh hot pancakes and sausage drizzled in Norlands’ own maple syrup. Visit the Sap House to see boiling demonstrations and meet the working team of oxen. Journey back to 1853 in the District #7 one-room schoolhouse. The schoolmarm will be ready to teach you the basics reading, writing, and ‘rithmetic using materials of the time. It’s all in fun! Burn calories from breakfast by walking (or snowshoeing) along the tranquil fields and wooded carriage trails on 445 acres at this National Historic Site.
