Feb. 13, Saturday, 10am-4pm, “Fairfield Chocolate Festival,” features some the best assortment of chocolate goodies and treats from local businesses vendors for all to purchase and enjoy! In addition to “All Things Chocolate”, the Festival will also feature crafts made by local merchants and community organizations for sale, hot food and lots of fun for everyone! Feb. 13, Saturday, various times, ‘Great Maine Outdoor Weekend,” three locations to enjoy, Quarry Road Recreation Area in Waterville offers a free day pass for the whole family to enjoy cross-country skiing on miles of groomed trails at Central Maine’s premier outdoor recreation area – all welcome! Skis available to rent at the Welcome Center Yurt; snowshoe trails and sledding hill also open for active family fun. This event runs from 10am-4pm. Explore the beautiful trails of the Messalonskee Schools in Oakland from 1-2pm. Snowshoes for kids and adults will be available to borrow for free on a limited basis. Join L.C. Bates at Good Will-Hinckley in Hinckley from 1-2pm for a guided walk on their trails to explore signs of animal life, free, Quarry Road Recreation Area, 300 Quarry Rd, Waterville, Messalonskee Middle School, 33 School Bus Dr, Oakland, and L.C. Feb. 13, Saturday, 11am, “23rd Annual Polar Bear Dip,” prove your love the day before Valentine’s Day by taking the Plunge! Not into wedded bliss but into the icy waters of Snow Pond at the 23rd Annual POLAR BEAR DIP! Hosted by the Maine Pond Hockey Classic our Saturday afternoon Dip will enjoy a great Winter Festival atmosphere: 34 teams competing in the fun, fast-paced and fiercely competitive sport; on-ice Beer Garden Players’ Lounge with bar food and drinks, ice candles and fire pits, blanketed benches and music; Community Free Skate Rink; Up For Whatever Games of corn-hole toss and hockey skills competitions in speed and accuracy; and MPHC swag at our Skate Shop in the Lodge! 92 Moose’s Matt James will be in attendance, DJ Chris Lothridge will provide the tunes to dive for, and Snow Pond is providing a nice warm building for changing out of those wet costumes before attending the Prize Ceremony in their Lodge. Feb. 13, Saturday, 7pm, “Mid-Winter Blahs Concert,” featured performers will be Stan and Dan, an acoustic duo that plays in the style of the brother duets of the 1930’s and 40’s, a tradition that led to the invention of Bluegrass music. Stan Keach and Dan Simons’ performances feature very tight vocal harmony and Dan’s virtuoso mandolin stylings. They demonstrate the applicability of the Brother Duet style to a wide variety of songs from folk, Bluegrass, rock, and country genres. The entertaining duo also sings original songs (many of them about Maine topics) written by Stan, a nationally-known Bluegrass songwriter. However her father will not let anyone marry her before her elder sister, the ill-tempered shrew Katharina, is herself married. French choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot lands a coup with his adaptation of Shakespeare’s comedy tailored specifically to the Bolshoi dancers, and achieves a magnetic two hours of breathtaking, nonstop dance unlike any other, portraying the Bolshoi’s audacity and energy in a completely new way.
